Dumping DS post-op

I had a lap DS on 2/28/01. I did not suffer from nausea the first few weeks,

but have had it on and off for about the last 3 weeks. I now realize that I

am dumping. If I eat anything with a medium to high sugar content (including

milk), I will get nauseated and sweaty and I will need to lay down and moan

until it passes. I have tried a small amount of sugar on a non-empty stomach

and it still happens.

I called Dr. 's office last week and spoke with his nurse. She said

that since I am only 7 1/2 weeks post-op my new tummy is still adjusting to

everything and that this will most likely pass. She said that if it

continues for " a while " , I should call again and perhaps see the doctor.

Well, I am in Chicago and the doctor is in Atlanta, so a trip is not likely.

Have any DS post-ops experienced dumping early on (or ever since surgery)?

Did it go away? What if it doesn't go away - is there anything that can be

done?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi :

Yes, I did dump, and still do occasionally if I eat sugar on a empty

stomach. It is horrible. I get very nauseated, sweat, shake, and I have to

lay down for about an hour. I am now almost 17 months post-op, and now it

only happens on a empty stomach, and it has to be very sweet. The first time

it happened I was about 6 weeks out, and I ate a bite of a sweet roll. I was

driving, and I could barely make it home,I was so sick . This has all gotten

so much better with time.

When all this started to happen, I thought I was given the wrong surgery,

but after contacting my Doctors office, I indeed had the DS, and have found

out that his office had another DS patient whom also dumped.

Of course this did slow my sugar consumption down, but I didn't stop it

totally. I would eat like 2 small midget tootsie rolls per day.

Things change so much over time. The first month or so, I thought I would

never eat sugar again as it was so sweet to me. Boy did that ever change.

With time, all my original taste buds were back-it took awhile but

everything taste the same to me now, after 17 months.

I am hoping I get that early yek taste again after my revision, so I will

not want to eat any sugar or bad foods for awhile. I guess I still think

anything but protein is bad.
