I bought a book called " Why Can't I Stop Eating "

I think I read about it here on this group.

I have known for a long time that I have a major problem with sugar

and flour. I am very concerned about getting rid of these in my diet.

I can tell you how much these two items have wrecked havoc on my

life, but probably some of you would already understand.

Well this is my problem. I want to have the DS, in fact I am so sold

on the DS, that if I could not get it, I don't know that I would

settle for the RNY. However, I am concerned that I will still be

able to eat sugar, and what if I can't stop this addiction that has

plagued me since childhood, ( now 35 years old ).

Do I need to incorporate OA or something, how will I be able to stop

these things, will I be able to stop eating sugar and flour.

I know that these things cause many people to want the RNY over the

DS so that they will have dumping and have to stop eating sugar. I

need some help from you post ops who have been a sugar and flour

addict, how did you handle this?

Hi Kathy - I am also a sugar addict. The first three months post-op

were amazing! I didn't crave sugar, didn't want, and couldn't even

eat it. It just did nothing for me. I am still marvelling over the

bag of Almond Joy bites that I had to throw away because I didn't

want them! At about 4 months, however, the addiction came back with

a vengeance (flour is not really a problem for me).

How do I handle it? I am not obsessing about it (much) . I eat

sugar every day; sometimes I eat more than I think is good for me.

Some days I consciously don't eat any at all - just to prove that I

can overpower it if I need to. Every day I give thanks that even my

sugar addiction is not enough to thwart this surgery. Has it slowed

me - perhaps so. Has it resulted in a major problem with the loss?

Not at all.

Thanks Kate so much for responding and giving me hope. If I can control it and eat very small portions I know I will be ok.

I did Weigh Down Diet twice and lost 100 lbs each time, (each time got pregnant and gained it back) . But the premise of Weigh Down is eat whatever you are craving but only in moderation and eat only when hungry and stop when full or satisfied. ( how most thin people eat all the time)

Well I followed this exactly and did eat sugar everyday but in such small amounts that it didn't bother me. I might have two tbls of ice cream or three M & M's.

In an 8 month period I lost 100 lbs due to eating only when hungry and eating what I craved.

I hope after surgery I can do this again.
