Guest guest
Ken, Just a thought our gentistist thought that you could do GH and then see if it would work, but the endocrine wanted the GTube for calories first then to try Growth Hormone. So far we have gained 3/4 of lb in week and two days. We go in for a weight check and post surgery this afternoon. Like all G-tubes here said it is a good thing to have done. We put it off trying other things for over two years. Still adjusting to it but it is working well and my stress level with eating has went way down. Maloy Update Hi everyone, I haven't written in a while. I have been busy using the internet looking for a job. By the time I get done with my job search I don't have the energy to write. A couple of things have happened and so I wanted to catche everyone up. First, my son is happy and healthy. He has done real well in kindergarten. This is gratifying becuse we were advised by many to hold him back. Today, he was hurt a little by one of his friends. We were baby sitting for friend. This kid is 's age ( 6 ) but he is 71 pounds and 51.25 inches tall. That puts him in the 98th percentile. It is funny to watch this boy and my son play. They are at opposite ends of the growth curve but try to do the same things. One can't becuse he can't control his large body and the can't becuse of his small size. Today my son's friend got carried away with his karate demonstration. My son is OK just a little upset. In other news we have been complaining to my son's ped. endo that he has been the same weight for almost 2 years-- 29.5 lbs. Today she finally responded to one of our e-mails admitting that indeed the grwoth hormone has not worked well at all and we should seriously consider a feeding tube as well to give him the extra calorie boost he needs to fuel his growth. Last, about a year ago we moved to get our son into a better school system. That decision has proved to be a correct one. We have gone from one of the worst school districts in the state to the best. At least we have done one thing right. I'll try and write more late. Ken M
Guest guest
Ken, I understand about the job searching. We were in that position just a bit under a year ago. The week that unemployment ran out, my husband was offered a job. The only problem is that they don't have a health insurance plan, instead choosing to give each employee $250/month towards health insurance. Like that will pay for anything! We have been keeping ourselves covered under COBRA, but that will end in December. Our plan had been that in the worst case scenario, we would enroll in my school's program, but since they have chosen not to rehire me, I am out of luck. It looks like we will pay a minimum of $1300/month for an acceptable plan. My practice better take off quickly in September to help cover that cost! I am really glad that is doing well. It's been a long time since you wrote good things about his schooling. As for the g-tube, you just may have to go that route. It's not a major operation anymore and it will help you and him so much. It really takes the pressure off to get him to eat and if he is sick and not hungry, you can feed him anyway. Well, you probably know all that just from reading the posts. Good luck with your search. As I said, I, too, am about to embark on a " new " career, or, rather, restart something I did 8 years ago. I'm excited, however, and think that it will work out. I hope so. Now if only we could get Max healthy and staying healthy. Tomorrow is his sonogram for his renal system, but I don't hold much hope for it turning anything up. Nothing is easy with Max - and we all need a break! Jodi
Guest guest
Hi Jodi, $250 a month towards health insurance, how cheap is that? I'd be tempted to tell them to take the 250 and -- well I'd better not finish that thought. What is your new career? If it is necessary we will do the g-tube but first we will retry the periactin. I just thought we were past the need for a tube. Maybe not. we shall see. Ken M > Ken, > > I understand about the job searching. We were in that position just > a bit under a year ago. Guest guest
Ken, My new job is going to be as an educational therapist. It is a title used by the International Dyslexia Association. Basically, I help kids with reading, math and study skills. I can set my own hours, take off when I want to and still be here if Max is sick, as he always seems to be lately. (The vomiting/spitting up and hiccuping are back in full force. We had to stop the Ditropan to see if that is causing it. Now he has to worry about wetting his pants, too!!!) I used to do this before Max was born, with Jenna happily upstairs with a babysitter and my being downstairs working. Then Max was born and I had to give up working altogether because he was so sick. I had a thriving practice and had to turn people away. My mom and I worked together in her house and I had an office here, too. It's really a great career. It will just cost us thousands of dollars to redo the basement, for me to take some courses and to order supplies. I'm trying to order a few things each month so that we can spread out the costs. The GOOD thing in all of this is that I can collect unemployment starting July 1 and keep collecting as I set up my business, which will take about three months. Jodi P.S. My husband is going to approach his boss and explain the health insurance situation. He is going to try to negotiate a $10,000 raise in order to cover those expenses. Guest guest
First, to everyone who attended the convention, thanks for posting! It is so interesting to hear all of it. Please keep it coming! Madonna, I was wondering what made Dr. H say " is insulin resistant. and she is afraid he is quickly heading for early puberty. " How does one diagnose 'insulin resistance'? I'm very interested in the Type II diabetes stuff as well. We just can't win, can we? My tube-fed daughter was kept at a plump weight so as to give her height a chance to catch up prior to starting the GH....now we hear that it may have been a mistake (I'm thinking of Dr. H's warning for , Pat's grandson.) We are in the same boat, I think. It's so hard and scary to me. What will they be saying in 10 years about the GH itself? Does anyone else get nervous about that? Guest guest
Hi Irene, Our 4yr. old daughter isabel also has Insulin Resistance. The first symptoms that I noticed were she developed body odor and had dark skin around her diaper area and her neck. So Dr. H ran some tests and sure enough she is IR. So basically if you have the symptoms IR can be confirmed with a blood test. Dr.H also said it is not good if she gains more weight, I don't know the exact reason, something to do with it being converted to estrogen or something like that(I may be completely wrong about the hormone name:). Isabel is only 31 lbs now and during our last visit Dr.H said you are feeding her too much , to the outside world, she is the skinniest child Isabel is on metformin the typical diabetic medicine. The darkening of the skin has decreased but she still has body ordor and pubic hair etc. Dr.H said, the body ordor is caused by antrogen and it is going to be there and it doesn't mean she is in puberty but we have to keep an eye on it. Every day something new, sometimes I feel, I really need to read up on these hormones/medicines so I can better understand what is going on with my child but then again I wonder the more I read and learn about the side effects of each of the medicines she is on, I get more worrried and concered. As you said, we just can't win Regards, Mini > > Well, steven got to see dr. H and I am soooo thankful for her > taking > > her time to see all of our children. Guest guest
--- One of the things that made her say this about him was the signs of the " dirty neck " that he had, and I will have to look it up in my notes to get the proper name for this and the other obvious thing was the recent rapid weight gain, all in the belly. and I mean ALL in the belly. I am havin confirming tests done on this later in the month (2 weeks) and I will post more about it after the results come back. However Dr. H said that she had no doubt in her mind that he was resistant. the early puberty has to do with other signs he is showing. She said that he could be very near to it, but not that he is already there. As hard as it is going to be, especially with your little guy, but really take it easy this next week. I'm totally sending up prayers and positive vibes for ya sweetie! Guest guest
Chrystal - I bled three times in my first trimester, and they also could not find any reason for it -- my OB said it's pretty common. I do think the timing of mine might have been when I would have been having my period (or, at least two of the three times). The other time, we had travelled a long distance by car, and I think it just might have been too much for me. Glad to hear all is well! Guest guest
Hi Angie! I don't have any advice, but I would just say to stay in bed like the doctor said. I know how miserable that is as I had to do it with my first pregnancy; but what was worse is that I ended up haivng to do one month of it in the hospital. I was respondig to your post because I have noticed your email address with the nc. does that mean that you are from nc? if so, where? i was just curious, as i am from nc and wondered if we were close enough that we had the same surgeons. i was just wondering how yours dealt with your pregnancy. i am only 5 1/2 weeks and go to see my surgeon tuesday. i guess this will be an in terestng visit. Well, good luck to you and your twins!
Guest guest
Hi Angie, I ended up having my twins at 34 weeks. Try to kekep those littel darlings in for as long as possible so they have time to develope the lungs more. If your contractions get worse you should call you doc back. Maybe they can give you something to stop them, you do not want to end up in active labor now, so call the doc to be safe. At 34 weeks my boys ended up ebing 3#10 and 4#10 and the stayed less that 2 weeks in the hospital, THANK GOD I wish you the best for you and those babies. The doc sent me to labor & delivery for over half the day to see if the boys were gonna decide to come today or not.... and guess what..... it was NOT! I am soo soo ready. I hurt from head to toe. They are such busy little boys .... Anyways, Thats the update for this week... I'll keep ya'll posted! Angie & Tim
