Guest guest
Ann Marie I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers as you face another rough spot with Joe. It is lots for a 5 year old to go through as it is for the rest of the family. Hugs, laurie
Guest guest
Hi, you guys are in our thoughts. I have a question - is your son's condition similar to spina bifida? I know that Vanderbilt has done some amazing fetal surgeries on spina bifida kids, I wonder if that might be a place to look at. I've had a similar symptom (dragging left leg in my case, and lost of feeling) due purely to sciatica, one of my disks was exploded. Is it possible he is getting spinal nerve involvement for a different reason, perhaps the progress of other things is unrelated? I have gait problems and drag my leg now as part of my mito symptoms, is he on the mito cocktail? I guess I'd think if he seems to have the same level of symptoms no matter what, it would be spinal cord related, but if there was any variety in his symptoms, I'd think disk (or tendon) damage, or mito. Hope this isn't totally in left field for the situation, but just based on my experience. Take care, RH > Hi all, > Joe is having more problems, this time with his right leg > not working (he's limping and not using the right leg > basically dragging it along). > After more X-rays and thorasic/lumbar spinal MRI, there is > concern that his spinal chord is having more problems. > Joe saw his local neurologist yesterday and confirmed that > the syrinx (fluid filled cavity in the spinal canal) is definitely > larger than on previous films and there appears to be more > fatty lipomas in the chord. Guest guest
Hi, The tethered spinal chord is usually associated with spina bifida, but Joe's case is rare b/c he doesn't have spina bifida. He had the chord repaired once already and it is very rare to have it retether. Then again, Joe is quite medically unique. The MRI we had done doesn't show any disk issues but the syrinx in the spinal canal, since it is enlarging, is putting pressure on the spinal chord. He has been on the mito cocktail for 2 years now and has had incredible progress since it started. I talked to our mito specialist about what is happening now, as I was also concerned that it might be the mito, but she felt that it probably wasn't. All the docs we have dealt with over the last few weeks seem to feel that his spinal issues are the primary cause of his deterioration. But we are doing a head and cervical spine MRI on Monday, just to be sure that there isn't more going on with Joe. Thanks, Praying for us all, AnnMarie L. - Complex IV (pre-diabetic, hypothyroid, adrenal/endocrine issues) Married to my best friend Rick, Very Busy Mom to (15), (12), Cassandra (6) and Joe (5) - complex IV, lactic acidosis, CP, tethered chord syndrome, dysautonomia, and a smile that never quits :-) > > Hi, you guys are in our thoughts. Guest guest
Hi AnnMarie, sorry to hear that your son is having so much trouble with his spine, not sure if this would apply to him at all, but i have spinal and disc deterioration, i also have a perminant, ununite fracture in my lower spine, and i was told although bone and joint disease is prominant in my family, having mito, can be a serious culprit, in my case my back muscle are very weak and we do need our muscles to help support our spine and to help keep it healthy. My son Matt has scoliosis, and once again due to weak muscle in his back, the mito is not helping his spinal cord much either. I wonder if there is a mito link with your sons spinal problems too?? Maybe Its worth asking about. I hope they find the answers so they can help your precious son!! And i pray its not causing him discomfort, God knows mito is enough with out these other problems to deal with too. Barb

Guest guest
Thanks for the update on , Kristie. This is sounding better all the time. I just looked at your caringbridge site. It’s wonderful. I did sign your guestbook. I had forgotten all about mine so I did some mind tapping and low and behold I came up with my own caringbridge site. You can see that I haven’t done anything but it’s a good reminder to get busy on it. Guest guest
I will continue to keep her in my thoughts and prayers. I could stand a few extra prayers also, I am recovering nicely (I guess) from surgery April first, my right arm is still in a cast and that makes it difficult to use the cane or the walker, I do fine pushing my computer chair in front of me in my apt, but I have to improvise when I have doctor appts. I see a hematologist who is also a genetic specialist wednesday and I see a surgeon about possible hernia surgery the 19th. I will have a second surgery on my wrist and thumb in June, the way things went on the first, I dread anything else. Guest guest
I'm so happy the party went well, sorry that you're dealing with so much stress over the doctors. You and your family are in our thoughts. I found with Dr. H-P that I ended up speaking to the nurses at the town MDA, and having them communicate to her worked out very well - they were able to page her to discuss my case if necessary... I had an appointment with a very good doctor last week - the problem was that she is very thorough and writes out the patient instructions on the spot, so I ended up being late and missing my son's dentist appointment and had to reschedule. Take care, RH > Hi all, sorry i havent been on for awhile, just busy dealing with > cancer docs, and dealing with exhaustion. Guest guest
Hi Carly, I think it is mainly her place of business and the type of work Does. I do agree with you about the carbs and getting them out of her system. Also, , you are what...2 years out now or vey close to it. I think it is so easy to get comfortable with our lives. I say that because I had about 3 grapes last night and I know that we are not suppose to eat the skin. Without even thinking, I popped in one then the second and then the third. I chewed and swallowed and then it set in....I ate the skin. I paniced but then I said I have to be careful and remember the basics. I think that getting back to the basics, one has to dig deep sometimes...back to the days when you had to lose the 10% and know that you have to do this..no matter what. I mean whose going to be hurt if you don't get back on the stick and reach your goal... " you are " . Who is going to be disappointed because you keep going through this revolving door... " you are " . Who has to look at you and remind you that you fell short of your goal... " you do " . You see...what I am getting at is it is up to you (well all of us here to as well) to do what you know has to be done. You already know you can do it because you did it to get this surgery. I suppose that you are so close to your goal that when you reach it, its sort of like...now what? Reaching your goal is only the beginning sistah, its definitely not the end. I think if you remind yourself of that, that it will click in your mind and you will get in gear and do this. Maybe the eating is some nervousness because of the Marathon. I don't know. I only want what is best for you and that would be for you to kick this habit. You can do it but until your realize this and start believing it, then nothing will change. You will be going on this continuous roller coaster with no end in site. Did you go through everything that you have gone through to just through it out the window...NO..I don't think so. Its sort of do or die at this point and you know that you have to want it more than wanting it. I love you dearly and I really hate that you are struggling and for anyone to struggle for that matter. I need you to remind me when I get to where you are because although I appear to have all the advice now, I just might not have the will power or strength when I am 2 years out as I am only 5 and half months out and you know I am going to need you to put me in check...don't you. I hope I was not too harsh or hard on you but I have grown to learn that tough love at its best is the best dose of medicine some times. I really hope you will find your way through this but as always, I and many others WILL ALWAYS be here to support you. Pam Marsh --- bczion13@... wrote: > > > Hi , > Are you worried about something? Guest guest
Dear Hil, Glad to hear you are feeling better and feeling more like yourself. Karima Update I feel really good just still weak and expect it will take awhile. No pain from surgery but the arthritis in my spine decided to act up so that puts me right down in bed. I have morphine from the hospital but don't want to take that. It is just wonderful to sit and eat a meal without running to the bathroom as soon as I get two bites. I only go 3 or 4 times a day now instead of the 20 or so. The surgeon had told me I would go more often but easier. I don't think they believed how many trips upstairs I was taking. I feel almost like a normal person:) I have not even had to get up during the night. I know we are using the best medical advances we have but nothing is perfect. This is the third time this mass has shown on a Pet scan or Pet/CT and it was NOT cancer. They would have done a biopsy like they did last year but the striture had gotten worse and they had no way to get up there to just biopsy. At least this surgeon got a lot of scar tissue out and hope I don't grow anymore:) I see him on Wed and now my mind is clearer I will get more info. I was not in to asking questions when they come in hospital at 5 am and your doped up besides. My CEA was running about 6 then started climbing and before this surgery had gone up to 12.1. Why that with no cancer I don't know but again it proves it is not that relieable. It very well could be because my smoking increased the more my nervous I got. I have finally woke up to the fact I have to stop smoking and am trying. Hil
