Guest guest
Hi Dana, How exciting that you are going to Japan! A few weeks back there was someone from Japan posting on this group – but I don’t recall the name. Perhaps you can look through past posts to find that person – may have helpful info for you on what is available to eat SCD in Japan. Here is the ice cream recipe from BTVC (courtesy Lois Lang): White Bean Ice Cream 2 cups white beans (well drained) 3 cups homemade yogurt 1 cup honey 4 large eggs ¼ tsp. salt 2 Tbls. vanilla Beat eggs, honey & salt together in the top of a double boiler. Place over boiling water & cook until thick, stirring constantly. Set aside while you prepare the rest of the ingredients. Place ¼ cup yogurt in bottom of blender. Add beans, 1 cup at a time, & process until very smooth. Add ¾ cup of yogurt & blend well. Pour this mixture into a very large bowl & add remaining 2 cups yogurt. With electric beater running, add custard mixture slowly, beating constantly. Add vanilla & mix well. Place in freezer & as the mixture freezes at the sides of the container, mix with unfrozen part. This should be repeated a few times until the ice cream is completely frozen. This mixture can be placed in a commercial ice cream maker instead of freezing in the freezer. Variations: 1. When ice cream begins to thicken, stir in ½ cups apple butter 2. Mashed or pureed banana, peaches, pineapple, strawberries can be folded in as mixture freezes. About to take a 2 week trip to Japan...and i can pack produce (limited, not much will last longer than a week) and I can bring nuts & dried fruit & tuna packs & olives ( all legal, of course) and probiotics... But I cant take enough for two full weeks! Any advice on eating there? I've been on SCD for over 2 years and doing great, and I really want to start traveling and figuring it out.... Also, if anyone has the white bean ice cream recipe, I am dying to try it out!!! _,_._,___

Guest guest
Hi, Dana, This will be tough because most Japanese foods include soy and sugar in the sauces. Many restaurants serve the food on rice or noodles. Many of the Western-style foods are breaded. If you are traveling with someone who speaks Japanese, you might be able to ask for some special arrangements. Otherwise I think I would try to mostly go to burger places and get a burger without a bun and also buy nuts to eat if you can eat them. Raw fish (sashimi not sushi--sushi always has rice) would be legal, but expensive. Many Japanese restaurants specialize in one type of food. It's a descriptive link: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2036.html The okonomiyaki that you grill yourself would be a good choice, but I never even saw a restaurant like that when I was there. I did go someplace where a group of us grilled and the style was called Jengis Kan (Genghis Khan) but again I only saw that one restaurant of that type. One good thing about Japanese restaurants is that they generally have plastic mock-ups of the dishes, with prices, displayed in their windows and so you can know what the restaurant serves before you go in. Another thing to note is that there are supermarkets in the basements of department stores, in many cases. You might find something to eat in these, as well as in convenience stores. I ran across fresh food markets (like farmers' markets) just walking around in cities (best to ask where at your hotel) and that would be great for your fruits and veggies, but I think protein is going to be problematic. , mom to > > Hi everyone!
