hi everybody

Can someone tell me HOW you know if you are lactose intolerant. I really

don't think that I am, mostly because everything else about me before the

surgery is the same now after.......no taste changes, etc. I am having a

pretty serious problem with gas however and am going to call for Devrom right

now! Would someone please respond that is using it. Does it just help with

the odor? It's mainly at bedtime. I feel like I am taking in the right

amount of fat because of the way my b.m.s are and my weight loss is good. I

bought some Gas-X but don't think it's working. I tried Beano for the first

time and it was great - I was having to lay off the beans totally before

I'm also having a lot of indigestion but Maalox and tums work quickly. Did

anyone else experience this and does it slow down?

HELP, PLEASE!

Thanks, Joy, for describing the lactose intolerance, that doesn't sound like

it since it's mostly late at night. I appreciate your response.

Joann...

I take Dairy Care for the lactose intolerance. It works very well. But

I wanted to mention to you that I get the very gas pattern you describe

when I eat wheat products, especially breads. The gas is not as bad if

I take some Beano with the bread but I find it's best if I just stay

away from breads most of the time.

You might try eliminating some things from your diet to see if the gas

goes away when you eliminate a particular food. Wheat and gluten

sensitivity are not uncommon after the DS.

Good luck....

I was lactose intolerant as a pre-op. I got awful gas and diarrhea

pretty quickly after eating/drinking milk, ice cream, cottage cheese,

etc. It was very sudden and unmistakable, within 30 minutes to an

hour after I consumed the dairy food. It was so violent and sudden

that it was impossible to attribute it to anything but the dairy

product. And it would happen every time I consumed untreated dairy

stuff.

Now, hard cheeses are not a good " barometer " for lactose

intolerance. Nor is yogurt, or even frozen yogurt. The cheese and

yogurt cultures partially pre-digest the lactose, so they aren't

good " test " foods for lactose intolerance. But they are wonderful

for eating after you have lactose intolerance. Even so, I still use

Lactaid caplets with the first bite of even cheese or frozen yogurt.

Even as a pre-op, I couldn't tolerate any kind of beans or " gassy "

vegetables either, without Beano. With Beano, I can have small

amounts of the gassy carbs and veggies now. But I don't eat large

quantities of them, and didn't even as a pre-op.

I am not intolerant to breads. They don't give me any gas at all. I

don't eat bread much anymore, 'cause I want to lose weight, and my

weight loss is so slow.
