hunger and fullness signals?

Hi all....

Seems like I am not one of those lucky DSers who get a really distinct

" off " feeling after surgery. I did have it for awhile right after

surgery when I could only eat a few bites at a time. But now I find

knowing when to stop eating to be a problem again. All too often I take

a bite too much and end up feeling horrible....I have never thrown up

from eating too much but I am afraid of stretching my stomach too much.

In fact I was starting to eat fairly large quantities of food and so I

decided to do an experiment. Last week I cut my portions nearly in

half. Turns out I was completely satisfied on the much smaller amounts

of food. (I probably went from about 1 1/3 cup of food at a time to 1/2

or 2/3 cup). While I was eating I would want to keep going, but once I

stopped and 30-45 minutes had passed I felt fully satisfied.

Today I had a realization. When I should be eating I often don't get a

hunger signal until I am really starving. And any time I do eat I think

I am interpreting the feeling of being full as a feeling of being

hungry. It's like my signals are reversed: when I'm hungry I don't

realize it, when I'm full I feel like I'm hungry. Does this make any

sense to anyone else?

This realization makes my pre-op eating make some sense. I think I was

also interpreting fullness as hunger then so I was overeating even more

than I realized....and often feeling that over-full sort of nausea as a

result.

I'm very interested in how other post-ops feel hunger and fullness.

Thanks for your input.....

Hi ,

Unfortunately, I didn't seem to have the " brain surgery " that some

have said to have had along with the DS surgery.

It took a week or so after surgery for me to notice, but when I get

hungry, I'm HUNGRY & I need to eat SOON! It can get to be almost a

pain, it becomes really strong. I can't wait a long time when I get

that feeling like I could pre-op. I have to eat soon after feeling

the first sign of hunger.

As for feeling full, in the beginning, I didn't get a fullness

feeling like I THOUGHT I should get, but rather I got this pain in

the side of my stomach. I stopped eating the first time I felt it.

I was afraid of stretching my stomach. Now I get a full feeling, but

it's still not what I expected, & it doesn't always mean that my

brain is done eating, but I'm learning to stop anyway. I've had to

realize that I have to do some brain re-training. I have to be more

aware of those feelings & make myself stop when I feel full or even

before.

Good luck to you,

Cheri
