Guest guest
Hi all.... Seems like I am not one of those lucky DSers who get a really distinct " off " feeling after surgery. I did have it for awhile right after surgery when I could only eat a few bites at a time. But now I find knowing when to stop eating to be a problem again. All too often I take a bite too much and end up feeling horrible....I have never thrown up from eating too much but I am afraid of stretching my stomach too much. In fact I was starting to eat fairly large quantities of food and so I decided to do an experiment. Last week I cut my portions nearly in half. Turns out I was completely satisfied on the much smaller amounts of food. (I probably went from about 1 1/3 cup of food at a time to 1/2 or 2/3 cup). While I was eating I would want to keep going, but once I stopped and 30-45 minutes had passed I felt fully satisfied. Today I had a realization. When I should be eating I often don't get a hunger signal until I am really starving. And any time I do eat I think I am interpreting the feeling of being full as a feeling of being hungry. It's like my signals are reversed: when I'm hungry I don't realize it, when I'm full I feel like I'm hungry. Does this make any sense to anyone else? This realization makes my pre-op eating make some sense. I think I was also interpreting fullness as hunger then so I was overeating even more than I realized....and often feeling that over-full sort of nausea as a result. I'm very interested in how other post-ops feel hunger and fullness. Thanks for your input..... ===== H Dr. Keshishian 11-21-00 __________________________________________________

I did not get a feeling of hunger til the other day and then it came on like a brief flash and disappeared. I ate dinner (a few bites) and about 10 minutes later the hunger signal came back and stayed. I laughed with Bob and said it was 'stuck' like a broken record. After a couple of hours it disappeared. Since then I have noticed that sometimes after eating I feel that feeling again albeit very faint, it is not a growly hunger feeling. Like my brain has my signals crossed. LOL Seems like I have to go to sleep to shut it off and when I wake up it is gone. I was hoping it was a temporary thing having to do with my body adjusting to its new roadmap. But you are 5 months out. What I am thinking/hoping is it takes 20 full minutes of eating for our brains to think we are full. But it sure does not take me 20 minutes to eat the few bites I have been eating. I am eager to hear what other post-ops have to say regarding this. Guest guest
Hi , I've come out of lurk mose so as to reply to your email. I had my surgery in Feb and lost about 16 pounds in the first two weeks and nothing in the next 7 weeks. I know the feeling that the brain hasn't quite figured things out. I had the band before this surgery and feeling full was easy. Not so easy any more. I can eat just about any quantity and can fit in a normal size meal. It is very frustrating to say the least. I never get nausea (wish I did sometimes) and the acid I used to get has gone as well. The only thing I don't crave is sugars which is a good thing. Thanks for the hint about halving food, I am going to try that one out and see if it makes a difference.
