Hi,

I am new to the board, but I wanted to share something regarding

Hepatitis C. I have had this disease for over 20 yrs. My doctor, (DR.

Scholten in Grand Rapids, Michigan)told me I needed to see a

gastroentrologist to release me for surgery. Well, I certaintly found

a wall in my pre-op journey. I met with him this morning, indicating,

that I had done research on this disease when I first found out I had

it. I didn't want the treatment for it. Quoting his nurse, 40% of the

patients who receive the treament, relapse after 6 months. I show no

elevated liver enzymes to show concern, or my PCP would have had me

do

more tests. This gastroentologist wants me to do a series of blood

tests, to check for Hepatitis A, B and C and what levels I am at.

Then

if that is of concern, he wants a liver biopsy done and if that shows

cirroshis (sp?) he will recomend treatment. All this takes weeks and

didn't he hear me say, that I don't want the treatment? He won't

release me unless I comply. What a crock if you ask me! I mean, I

will

be opened up in surgery, if there is a problem, I am sure I will find

out then. I have no outward systems of the disease (spots or

tiredness

etc). Not to mention, he stood there for 5 minutes telling me how he

doesn't approve of the surgery. That, people that are heavy eat the

wrong foods. Foods high in caloric intake and that he only hears of

people cheating the surgery. We know how to get around it, is what he

said. I was just about to say some chosen words, but thought against

it. I will get the blood work done, and search for a new

gastronentrologist. Does anyone know of a good one, meaning one that

is sympathetic to our cause? And has anyone else have Hepatitis C?

Thanks

Sally, this was totally uncalled for treatment! Can your bariatric surgeon give you a referral? This makes me so mad when I hear "educated" doctors say things like this. Sometimes I think we are more educated than they are! Good luck in your search!

Thanks Micky. I appreciate your kind words. When I got back to work,

and all the people at work are supporting me, it was the same message.

Find someone else! Don't let this stop you! It is great to have people

who hear you. Thanks again!
