I would think that the reason for such a high

morbidity rate is because the surgery is performed on

very high risk patients: morbidly obese people with

co-morbidities. I.E. sleep apnea, diabetes, heart

ailments, high blood pressure, breathing problems,

difficulties with ambulating causing blood clots, etc,

etc, etc. Let's face it, we are one of the most

dangerous populations to perform surgery on. Of

course, I'm no medical professional, so I could be

wrong... but I'm probably on target with my

accessment.

You could be right about the morbidity rate being related to the fact

that we're high-risk. This is also a rather complicated surgery, esp.

compared to something like appendectomy. One of the things that is

helping me make my decision is that I ended up having a full cardiac

evaluation done in February - a muscle spasm in my back did a good job

of imitating a heart attack, and really gave me a scare. Anyway, I

came back from a cardiac cath with an absolutely clean bill of health

as far as my heart is concerned, and I'm feeling like maybe I ought to

act now before I develop any problems there.
