Definitely check with your nephrologist before starting Miralax. My kidneys are testing OK, so far, so Miralax isn't an issue for me yet; too large a dose of magnesium affects my kidneys (more on that in a minute) but I haven't developed kidney disease. But you need to be careful, so check with your doctors.

I have been using magnesium glycinate for 4 years, either in capsule or in powder form and mixing it in water or in my electrolyte-boosting drink. I tried several other forms of magnesium, but found the glycinate form worked best for me. I just started testing liquid magnesium (BodyBio/Elyte). The magnesium glycinate capsules I have been getting from Kirkman Labs; the powder I usually get as a cal/mag powder, as I need the calcium for muscle response more than bones, but don't have one source as yet, still trying different brands.

My stomach is ultra-sensitive, as is my immune system. I also seem to have some absorption issues with oral supplements. So I have found that my body absorbs the minerals it needs best when they are already in water. I just empty the magnesium capsule into water, add other minerals as needed (I have to supplement potassium a few times a week), and drink. Magnesium makes me sleepy, so I usually drink a glass at night before bed. This regular dosage of magnesium also keeps my legs, feet, arms and hands from cramping frequently (and painfully) day and night. I also drink an electrolyte drink several times a week, depending on how physically active I am being, so I often get extra magnesium and potassium (and other minerals) in addition to the magnesium drink at night.

Seems to be working for me. My last blood work showed a slight increase in my mineral levels. And better yet, my stomach and immune system is being tolerant of the extra minerals.

I just have to keep supplement dosages low to avoid an immune response, and to avoid aggravating my kidneys (pain kicks in about two hours after swallowing too large a dose of a capsule or tablet) and eventually aggravating my bladder lining (diagnosed with interstitial cystitis). So mixing in water solves several problems for me.

Prune juice works well if your body tolerates it. Mine didn't, but I have a weird stomach [grin].

I haven't tried zinc or zinc-carnosine, but it should be OK as long as there are no illegals in the capsule or tablet or whatever form you are taking it in.

Kim,Thanks for your informative post. I read about Miralax and there are many good reviews on this product on Amazon and other sites as well. Seems to be a good product, however, it has a warning on it for those who have kidney disease. I have kidney disease so I will need to check with my Nephrologist about this and see if maybe it will be alright for me to take this short term.I do take a powdered buffered vitamin C but probably need to increase it a bit. I did take magnesium malate but it upsets my stomach. I noticed that magnesium citrate or glycinate is what's recommended on the SCD. Any recommendations on which brand to get and where to get it? Does it upset your stomach when you take magnesium tablets? I need to start on this just because of the cramps I've been having lately. Plus if it helps with my bowels that would be a big bonus! : )I do drink a lot of water everyday, about four liters daily. I just started taking some prune juice this afternoon after reading what you and another poster said about it. Hopefully this will help. I also take 75 mg of zinc-carnosine twice a day. It's supposed to be helpful in healing the gut. Hopefully it's a "legal" substance on the SCD. Do you know about this?I sure do appreciate you taking the time to respond to my post. Glad I found this place as I have a lot to learn and this seems like a good place to come and learn and get support as well. Sure hope you get better with your GI issues. Thanks again!
