Guest guest
Gen I came across the information on Diflucan back when I started SCD and was dealing with a systemic candida overgrowth and doing some heavy-duty research into eliminating yeast/candida plus needing to understand why my immune system reacted severely to Diflucan (sent me to the ER) and then began reacting to natural antifungals as well (I now react allergically to nearly all oral antibiotics, and have to be careful with the IV antibiotics as well...) I'll see if I can find the citations for you. I can't get into the medical literature databases today, but will later this week if work isn't too hectic. Just did a quick web search, and found several sites discussing long-term use of antifungals, both natural and prescription. The gist: "it may also minimize the concentrations of friendly gut bacteria with long-term use." I think long-term use is the key to how much damage antifungals will do to the other microorganisms. My impression is that just as antibiotics kill off beneficial bacteria along with the bad, leaving the field open for fungal organisms, antifungals can also disrupt the gut ecology in a similar fashion, particularly with long-term use. Antifungals do target the fungal microorganisms, but bacterial organisms are also affected. You mention needing Diflucan infrequently. I'd say you probably won't have any long-term issues with it then, since you probably boost your probiotics at the same time. I'll post the citations and/or text of articles I find on this issue later on this week. Kim M. SCD 5+ years >>>>>>>>>>> Hi Kim, I was very interested in your statement re/diflucan that it is "hard on the gut and kills lots of microorganisms--good along with bad" and would potentially affect Eileen's digestion. This came as surprising to me. I had read and been told by my gyn that fungal organisms were the targets of this drug. I know one must be vigilant for problems with the liver but never heard it killed "good" organisms. Could you tell me where you found this information? I have a problem with yeast and not infrequently must use this drug. I am very interested in your statement/information.Thank you,Gen
