Guest guest
It feels so good to be home...there really is not a bed like ones own. At least that is my opinion. Today, May 11th, should have been my surgery date, but I am sure glad it was moved a week earlier & now I feel like sitting here & sending this message. I had a very uneventful surgery --Dr Inabnet told my husband that all went well in surgery & Part 1 took about 2 1/2hours. Breathe. I did have some complications in recovery & spent 15 hours in recovery trying to be taken off of the ventilator--then I was moved to the stepdown unit for a couple of days. There I had my first leak test on saturday--it was negative so I started on clear liquids. On Sunday for lunch I was advanced to stage 2 soft diet & late on Sunday, I was moved into my private room. I could rest much better. My husband was great!!! He certainly stepped up to the plate & helped with everything--walking, wiping & hand-holding. I started with a low grade fever on Sunday, of course, I was scared to death (so to speak)---OMG, what if something was wrong now---fever went down, but on Monday it came back with a vengence, by Tuesday I was pretty lethargic--they sent me for another leak test & chest xray...both were good- whew!!!!! bonus leak test & still no leak-- turned out to be a urinary tract infection--they put be back on iv fluids & now they could treat me with antibiotics which they did until I was discharged on Wednesday. The good thing about the couple of extra days in the hospital, I was physically able to return home to Delaware instead of staying in NYC a couple of extra days. My Mt Sinai experience was definitely positive---I had only on nurse that was from some military camp (unfortunately, that was on the day my fever was the worst (103) & she did not ever seem to be around & then a PCA that wanted me to use the bedpan so he would not have to disconnect my cardiac monitor. Well, no way--you disconnect it or I will--I am walking to the bathroom..he disconnected, but never returned. My Dr.was great--he kept me informed as to my test results & plan of treatment--I would definitely recommend him. That is a good thing since I will be using him again for Part 2 in about 6 months. Eating has been a bit of a challenge--cannot quite get enough in, but I can tell when I am full--wow!!!!what a concept--knowing when I am full & actually stopping eating. Sorry, for the long post--just wanted to let everyone know that I am back & on the road to recovery---Thanks to everyone for the phone calls, emails & for keeping me in your thoughts & prayers. My husband was amazed at the telephone support from the people on the list--all those calls!!!! Thank you so very much. Guest guest
Ogretta, Glad you're home and recovering well! I heard about the long stay in the recovery room. That was an interesting comment you made, btw, about actually being able to tell when you're full! I can't really tell when I'm full now, so sometimes I eat again in a few hours and that was definitely one of my concerns, ie..would I screw this up because I didn't know was actually full and didn't keep that full feeling. I'm going to trust in the surgery (and the 3-5oz size of my stomach post-op) though Keep us updated!
