Hi Sandy,

I had DS surgery with Dr. Warden in Ocean Springs on 2/6/01. I know

what you mean. It is probably your discomfort & tiredness that is

making you grumpy! Don't drink the soda pop...not yet! I don't know

about the coffee, I imagine it would be okay if it's caffeine free,

but then what's the use? I know.... Concentrate on getting in your

fluids & vitamins. I had no idea how I was going to get in 60+ grams

of protein in a day then. Another fellow Boother told me not to

worry about it so much. I'd be okay for awhile & I was. I ate what

I could. I tried to drink a protein shake every morning.

Also, every morning I'd get up & fill up my hospital mug with ice &

pour a bottle of water over it. It would take me just about all day

to drink it. I probably wasn't getting enough liquid in, but get in

as much as possible. When I got tired of water, I drank decaf tea.

I also drank crystal light or mixed it with water cuz it was too

strong for me. When the water felt too heavy on my stomach, I put in

a few squirts of lemon juice & that helped a lot.

As far as excercise goes, I know they want you up & walking like

yesterday, but do what you can. Try to walk a few laps around the

inside of your house. It rained for weeks after my surgery, so

that's about all I could do.

Lastly, get lots of rest! I heard on a health show that your body

does it's healing in the first 45 mins. to an hour or so of sleep.

For the first week or two, I went to bed by 10 pm, didn't get up

until 10 am & took a 2-3 hour nap every afternoon. And boy do I know

about not sleeping on your side! It took me 8 weeks to the day until

I could actually SLEEP on my side! And then I could only sleep on my

right side. Now I can sleep on my left side too & my stomach some.

It's funny because when I lay on my right side, I burp. When I lay

on my left side, I usually end up having to get up & use the

bathroom! But I sleep on my side now & love it more than I ever have

before! :-) Your day will come too! My sister had her surgery 3

weeks after me & she came home sleeping on her side & within a week

on her stomach! MADE ME SICK! :-)

Everyone's body heals differently & in different amounts of time.

Just take it easy & do the best you can. Call the dr's ofc. if you

have any problems or need anything. Also, feel free to email me

privately. I can give you my phone number, if you want.

Hope you're feeling better soon. It DOES get better, I promise!

Take care,

Cheri (in AR)
