But I think after 3 weeks they switch you to something that is more absorbing like cal-citrate. Studies have shown that citrate is absorbed better BUT there have been post-ops who use carbonate and have completely normal lab results! It really depends on the person as to whether they will absorb the carbonate effectively or not (it also depends on other factors like bone density, genetics, etc.) So, one does not HAVE TO take a citrate. You can take the chewable carbonates until the three week post-op bloodwork and decide then. Also, I've heard there is a chewable form of citrate put out by Twinlabs.
