Guest guest
I meant to post a reply a few days ago, but I lost the thread . . . FWIW in November 08, before we started SCD, I contacted Klaire labs to inquire about mixing probiotics with coconut oil (coconut oil being a strong anti-fungal agent) The cust. service rep at Klaire inquired to their research MD/PhD and relayed the message that: If using Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, wait 2 hours between giving/consuming cocout oil and Klaire's probiotics to make sure that the probiotics would remain effective because yes, the EVCO is THAT effective as an anti-fungal agent. If using Expeller Pressed or Refined coconut oil, you may give them at the same time. This was a concern for me because I make dairy-free smoothies for my sons with their supplements and use coconut oil, so . . . I use Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil. I changed over from EV Coconut Oil to Expeller Pressed Coconut Oil. Tropical Traditions is powerful coconut oil, and even with the expeller pressed, we saw a lot of die-off - this was pre-SCD. Now, I give them their acid. and S Boulardi in the evening, away from coconut oil . . .. For those who may be new to coconut oil products, Extra Virgin has a VERY distinct coconutty smell and taste, and the bottle usually indicates it as such. TT's Expeller Pressed has no-noticeable coconut taste or smell, and works great as an all-around neutral oil for smoothies, baking or cooking. Coconut Oil is a saturated fat and solidifies at 76F, so unless you keep it in a warm place, it will be solid. For best results, use it in its liquid state. I keep mine on top of my oven on a shelf, and in the winter, sometimes I need to warm it slightly in a water bath. It gives great creamy mouth-feel to dairy free smoothies and popsicles made with frozen fruit in a Vita-Mix . . . you need to mix quickly to avoid chunks! I have also used Radiant Life's EVCO - which is very coconutty, and I actually like to use it better on my body after bathing - it gives you the smoothest and softest skin. My family does not like the flavor! Interstingly, I also discovered that while coconut flour was advanced, I needed nut-free alternatives for my sons at school, and we ALL digest treats made with TT's coconut flour very well. The fiber seems to be very good for us. They also have great recipes that you can fiddle with and adapt to SCD on their website. Hope this helps someone . . . and PS - I just like Tropical Traditions - I receive no incentives from them at all. http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/expeller-pressed_coconut_oil.htm Best, Kim in NJ, SBS from bowel resection Feb 03, Lyme(Maybe ugh!)June 09, Nervous system degeneration, trying to figure out what is causing it. 2 4 yr old adopted boys, not bio related to me or each other with ADHD/SPD,k.oxytoca & candida overgrowth.
