Terri, I'm sorry to hear about Nurse Betty. It's funny how we can get attached even to little creatures like hermit crabs. My parents had good success with theirs. The habitat was a kitty litter pan with rocks & fake plants in it; a little sunken water hole (I think it was a peanut butter lid). They fed them lettuce, peanut butter, little chunks of whatever my parents were eating. I wouldn't have thought it was a healthy diet, but the little guys lived quite a while. I think 2 of them outgrew their shells at least once. Maybe it was just luck; I'm sure that Herman falling from the screen door repeatedly couldn't have been good for him!

I really enjoyed our gerbils, when we weren't overrun with them! A couple of times a week we would put them in their "playground," a big cardboard box with old toys & toilet roll & paper towel tubes. Every time they saw a cardboard tube, they acted like it was the first one they'd ever seen! One of the toys was a Millenium Falcon (you Star Wars fans know what it is) that I bought at Goodwill, just for the gerbils. They loved it, lots of places to hide, run in & out. It was so funny to watch them. Then there was the Skywheel. We just had metal cages, not the fancy tunnel sets. We found a 3-story cage & suspended their little wheel from the top of it. So they had to go to the top level to get on the wheel & if they fell off, they fell to the bottom of the cage. Of course we kept a thick layer of bedding. Anyway, the funniest thing was how they would take turns on that wheel. One would be running & the other would be waiting, but getting impatient, putting out a paw now & then, until the first would get off & his brother would jump on & start running like mad. These were the famous Scooter & Skeeter. I never got tired of watching them. They were very gentle, maybe because we had been holding them since they first got a little fur on them. Occasionally one of them would escape & they were so easy to catch. We'd just put a cardboard tube down & sit back to wait. Within a few minutes, a little gerbil would appear from under the sofa or somewhere, go right to the tube & inside! If I had someone who would be reliable at cleaning the cage, I'd consider it again. But probably not until the little ones in the family are a few years older.

Whew! Another long story.

Rose,

I kinda like Tuttle - if he stays for more than a week - Tuttle will be it. BTW did I let you know Nurse Betty passed away. I didn't have her as long as Dr. Claw but it still made me sad. My husband gave her a burial at sea. I don't think I will get anymore; I worry that I am doing something wrong.

Rose, Sounds like you had a great time with your gerbils. I had two growing up called "Chip 'n Dale" but they were nowhere as tame as yours. Your story brought back memories though! lol DebbieRose wrote: Terri, I'm sorry to hear about Nurse Betty. It's funny how we can get attached even to little creatures like hermit crabs.
