Can I just say that I have NEVER before been mixed up with Sharon

Stone! :-)

I want to say that I have noticed two physiological differences

between me and a FEW other BPD-only patients and BPD-DS patients.

1. Supposedly some 5% of the BPD patients have the breath odor problem

that I've had -- I've connected with a few and we give each other

support and advice. I've found that by eliminating dairy (which makes

me smell like curdled milk) and heavy meat meals and taking a couple

of other minor prophylactic measures that I'm pretty much able to

control the odor. I think. WIll find out more as my dating life

continues. :)

2. BPD-only patients don't reach satiety in their eating as readily as

BPD/DS patients do. Dr. Rabkin estimates that BPD-only patients eat

1.5 to 3 times post-op what we ate pre-operatively.

100cm is not an unusual length for a BPD-only common channel -- that's

what Dr. Marcus does with his BPD-only patients. (He's very recently

started offering the BPD/DS, incidentally.) 100 cm common channel

still allows for excellent weight loss and maintenance in a BPD or

BPD/DS patient.

For me, I went through a period of anger and huge disappointment when

I realized that the BPD WITH the DS was available when I had my

surgery, but I'd never heard of it. Of course, it was truly in its

infancy at the time (Hess had only been doing it for 3 years).

I still believe that I got an excellent surgery with spectacular

results. But it's also the surgery that I chose and I got exactly what

I signed up for.

I've had extra challenges (the breath odor), but I'm so happy with my

life now and the breath odor is pretty controllable that it's hard

for me to focus on any negatives or unwelcome challenges.

Warmly,

Sharon E. SNYDER, 10 years and 2 days post-op
