Yes the

swelling in your feeties would be from seating in the wheelchair all day, can

you raise the foot rest some so there not straight down, that might help some.

I suppose it’s a good thing when the neuropathy gets bad enough that the

pain goes away, this heel pain is driving me crazy!

So Ronnie

boy, raise your feet when ever you can. Do you drink a lot of water, that will

help to. Take care.

Swollen Footes

Does anyone have problems with their feet, I mean

foots swelling? My

foots have been swollen for months now.

My kidneys are functions fine and my recent echo showed no

abnormalities. I try to elevate them at times and this does seem to

help a little bit. But the swelling returns.

Could this be from sitting in the wheel chair all day, every day?

I too use to have peripheral neuropathy in my feel like Marla. But now

my foots, I mean feetses are totally numb. Any suggestions would be

totally appreciated. I used to have pain to, but now the pain is gone,

so I presumed so is the normal functioning of the nerve, huh Marla?

Whatcha thank girl?

Ron,

The feet swelling is a huge sign that the heart is having to work hard to keep functioning and keep the other organs going.

Yep, it is primarily from sitting in a wheelchair all the time. Deconditioning is a huge problem--more so since you're forced to be sedentary.

One thing you may want to try is to do arm exercises (start with no weight at all) and just get those arms moving. While you're sitting there-- march in place-- just a couple of times (4-5 reps each leg to start)-- and work up from there.

After a week or so of "chair exercises"-- pick up a 1 pound weight (rice, butter, whatever--do not eat it--use it as your "barbell") and start doing the exercise with the "weight." (A women in my pulm rehab class started with pencils.-- Is now up to 3# weights at 6 weeks).

This will get that blood circulating-- and that will help to clear the fluids from your body. (Drink more!)

The other side of this-- if your body is thirsty, and you don't give it the fluids you need-- whatever you drink ends up being stored (in your extremities- hands, fingers, feet) because your body is in fear of being starved.

One of the other components is that we develop lymphedema-- swelling of the lymphs-- and guess what-- feet are extremely lymphatic! So that too adds insult to injury. See if you can contact a hospice center, and get the name of someone that can teach you and your mom lymphatic massage-- it will work those fluids back towards the organs that can get rid of the fluid!

One other ditty on swollen feet, or fluid retention in general-- A bit of lemon added to your glass of water (don't go for the "lemonaide" as it has a bunch of sugar)-- but just a sqeeze of lemon in tap water-- will get you flowing real well. Your liver and kidneys love the Vit C-- and hey, water weight is the first weight we gain, and the first weight we lose!

All of Tracie's suggestions are excellent. I have just one more. Do you have access to a REAL hot tub or pool? Immersion in chest deep water for 30-45 min. at a time will often lead to signification diuresis (peeing out the retained fluid). Just sitting in a normal bathtub doesn't do the job; it's not deep enough. If you have access to a hot tub, ask that the temp be turned down to 85 or less; it's still plenty warm & you will tolerate prologned immersion better. High temps can cause lightheadedness, even fainting. I've seen pregnant moms lose 6-8# overnight, with obvious decrease in swelling. When I was a kid, I thought I had to pee a lot when swimming because I swallowed so much water! As a nurse I learned about the diuretic effect. Now Ron, this has to be a REAL hot tub or pool. You can only use a virtual pool if you have virtual edema.

Connie,

Try lemon in the water-- it works. Also, Milk Thistle tea and capsules- they won't interfer with your meds-- help detox the liver. All of our meds are very hard on our livers, and with the heart involvement, it makes it even harder to clear the fluids from our bodies.

Another insight-- diet sodas or soda or sparkling water-- adds alot of salt to our already taxed body. If your not getting enough fluid (even 2 oz of hydration shortage) makes our bodies think that they are "starved" for fluid. The natural occurance is that the body thinks it has to store that fluid -- and the easiest place to put it is in the extremities.

Also, with the lymphatic involvement that sarcoidosis loves (those really sore spots behind the knees, across your chest and ribs, neck, feet, thighs-- are all full of lymphs. If the sarc has scarred that tissue, then the lymphs can't clear the fluids. We end up with all those toxins we ingest (including our medication) just sitting in the lymphs-- and the result is pain. As the lymph nodes swell, they put pressure on the adjacent nerves, and then the nerve pain increases, along with the numbness, tingling, burning, etc.

Ester C--esterfied vitamin C-- is a good detox. Go slowly, so you don't put out so much in the way to toxins that have been hanging around- but you can work up to a dose that would cause you a case of diarrhea, then back down to when that stops-- and that should be your level of need for Vitamin C.

Vit C is water soluble, so you can't get too much-- you just pee off the excess. Hmmm-- isn't it peeing that makes us get rid of that fluid!

As I said to Ron-- lymphatic massage is also very important. Most Hospices know of people that specialize in lymphatic massage-- as cancer patients have a big problem with this-- so that is a good place to call and find a practicioner.

Lymphatic massage should use CORN SILK instead of oil for massage, so that you don't clog the pores. It works!

Hope this helps,

Connie, I once went to see a doc cuz I was so nauseous all the time...really bad...and he told me to drink more water. No tests, x-rays...anything. I went out to the car and cried. I was in shock at the shoddy treatment. It actually reminded me of the abuse I have also experienced at the hand of other men all my life. Like we are just being discounted as people or something. harder to clear the fluids from our bodies.Another insight-- diet sodas or soda or sparkling water-- adds alot of salt to our already taxed body. As the lymph nodes swell, they put pressure on the adjacent nerves, and then the nerve pain increases, along with the numbness, tingling, burning, etc.Ester

C--esterfied vitamin C-- is a good detox. Go slowly, so you don't put out so much in the way to toxins that have been hanging around- but you can work up to a dose that would cause you a case of diarrhea, then back down to when that stops-- and that should be your level of need for Vitamin C.Vit C is water soluble, so you can't get too much-- you just pee off the excess. It works! Hope this helps,TracieNS Co-owner/moderator Sneak preview the all-new Yahoo.com.
