RE: interpretation competency

We just published a Guide for serving limited English proficient patients

that highlights 12 health centers and the innovative programs that are

being conducted in the area of language access. Some health centers have

interpreter training programs or conduct an assessment of competency during

interviews and could be good resources for your project. For example, one

health center, Asian Health Services, has developed a 50 hour, 6 week

health care interpreter training program that covers topics such as legal

and ethical issues, culture and health, and medical terminology. I believe

in addition to Asian languages, the health center also provides

interpretation services in Spanish.

We are developing an interpreter competency program here in the hospital

system where I work. We have completed a draft of a form we'd like to begin

using. I would like the expertise of this group to critique what we have

done so far. Does this form seem reasonable? Where could it be improved?

Does this form do an adequate job of assessing someone's written and oral

skills as an interpreter?
