Dear and :

Thanks so much for your feed back re: Dr . it was nice to hear from someone who is seeing him and your assessment seems reasonable to me. Clearly, anyone who has made it to this support group has been doing their research and will probably continue to do so until they choose a surgeon. It is good to hear from you both

Thank you

had correspondence with Dr about this very issue. He apparently at that time, Oct 2000, said he had done the MGB, preferred the open RNY. At that time he was applying for membership in the ASBS but he hadnot done the requisite 25 bariatric surgeries yet.

And a quote from a post by a Dr patient from a post dated Wed Nov 1, 2000 4:47 pm

"Ok, so the scoop is...Dr. has done the MGB. He has done it only a few...when ask...less than 5. Reason why he has not done more and I quote "To be frank with you, this procedure was asked for and even though I had reservations about it, I did do it per patient's desire to have this particular type of WLS"

probably gets her information because his email address is bilroth@... . It is assuming quite a bit though doncha think???

Dr is a general surgeon who specializes in Bariatric Treatments. I think he studied all kinds of bariatric surgery and that is to be applauded not condemned. I wish a lot of bariatric surgeons would do that. They can then make informed decisions regarding which kind is the best. So many surgeons hang their hats on the RNY and refuse to look at other options. I think that a surgeon that does colon cancer surgery and colorectal surgery could splice intestines together.

He performs the following types of surgery :

Open Roux en Y gastric bypassLaparoscopic RNYOpen Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch

General Surgery:

Gall Bladder and Management of Common Duct Stone

Diagnostic Laparoscopy

Appendectomy

Splenectomy

Nissen Fundoplication

Hernia Repair

Colon

Colorectal Cancer

Breast Lump/Mass

Thyroid and Parathyroid Procedures

Pancreatic Cancer/Pancreatitis

Dr. is a native of the Philippine Islands. He finished his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in Biology and Chemistry. He graduated medical school from Wake Forest University, the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He trained in vascular and general surgery at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. He has been in private practice in Winston-Salem since 1991. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. Dr. considers himself truly blessed to have trained with some of the pioneers in bariatric surgery. Dr. has a strong interest in bariatric surgery, the surgical treatment of obesity. Dr. ' exposure to bariatric surgery started in residency with the late Dr. Ross McElwee, and Dr. Henry of the Charlotte Surgical Group. He had some exposure to the Greenville Bypass Procedure at the East Carolina University Medical School with Dr. Walter Pories. In private practice, Dr. learned the original biliopancreatic procedure (Scopinaro) from his mentor, Dr. Ismael Goco.

It certainly looks to me like he knows his way around the insides of the body. He has no censures on his license. No warnings or administrative fines.

If you are happy with Dr and you have done the research about your doctor listen with your heart and your mind.

My advice to anyone researching their doctor is to check out their license. Check out the Board of Health to find out how many deaths have been attributed to his care and above all ask the doctor yourself and then compare what you are told with the facts you have gathered.

Good luck!

I'm not going to Dr. as I live in Ohio and

have a surgeon close by, but I still appreciate the

info you posted. It reminded me of how valuable this

list is in researching this procedure! Thanks, Angel
