From what I've been told, our bodies can't absorb that much protein

in one sitting. I'm not a protein drink person...the only protein

thing I do is a soup that has 16 grams in a 6 ounce cup. I have that

after I workout.

That's what I've been doing (with Isopure) the last few days since

surgery - splitting half in the morning and half at night.

Yes a magic Bullet is a small high speed blender, and it's really good

because it has a base on which you just put a cup and blend! I got mine

from Walgreens.com, but I think that Target has them as well. I just love

it, it's the best thing for making our shakes. LaWanda At 05:59 AM

Actually somewhere in this mass of mail that I have been going through, one

of us said that the reason Beth, at Richmond, didn't want her patients to

drink the shakes was that they were liquid and didn't stay in the pouch

long enough to do any good. Funnily enough, I was just wondering about

that earlier tonight, while I was drinking a protein shake for dinner. It

makes a kind of sense, and yet those on the boards, who believe in the

shakes, say their protein stays right up where it should be. Eleanor, if

you are around will you please tell me how this is. I love my shakes, and

I want to keep drinking them, but I also need to justify the additional

calories. LaWanda who isn't losing weight quickly enough. At 12:02 PM

Good morning Laurie,

Could you talk a little more about this to me? Randy is diabetic, and yes, working on that dreaded 10% weight loss. He has splilled potein before, but we thought it was due to kidney issues. He has never had kidney problems but many of his brothers and sisters have. Thanks for the input, we go to UCLA tomorrow night and will ask them about it.

Do we have to have protein shakes? I was told by Dr. Baggs office that

we don't need them and we get it all through food, is that right?

Thanks for all the info Eleanor and I will keep this in mind. By the way, I am an adult, hehe, I am 28.

TammyEleanor Oster wrote:

Well Tammy, I know what the Richmond program says, and I have to say I disagree with them. It's interesting that the SSF and Fremont programs, as well as Pacific Bariatrics, who trained a lot of those folks, are in favor of the protein drinks. You are (presumably) an adult, and will have to make your own decisions. I will however share with you my experience. When I was researching my own surgery, I decided to take a look at what successful, long-term posties were doing. These were people who had had their surgery more than five years ago, who were healthy and maintaining their weight loss. I found that the vast majority of them were doing protein drinks. Hm, if I want what they got, maybe I should do what they do. It has clearly worked for me.\I know the Richmond program seems to think that malnutrition is okay for the

first few months, because the goal is to lose weight quickly. I STRONGLY disagree with this! It is far easier, and healthier, to keep oneself healthy and well-nourished than it is to build up the bodies reserves of things like protein, calcium, iron, etc., once those reserves have been depleted. I also fail to see how I can eat enough protein during the three meals a day (NO more, according their very strict guidelines) to give my body enough. Beth said I could eat three ounces of meat, fish, or poultry, or three eggs at every meal, and that would fill my needs. THREE EGGS?!? At a time when my pouch was the size of one egg? That doesn't even include the fact that we absorb protein from different sources differently. It is MUCH easier for our bodies to absorb protein from the whey-based protein drinks than from meat.Like I said, you will have to make your own decisions. I personally drink the protein drinks. I know how I feel

when I do, and I know how I feel when I don't. Do they make me fat? If you were to see me, you'd probably think I was THIN, except for my thighs. That is the only place I have any appreciable excess, and that is just NOT going to go away without plastic surgery. Makes my choice very clear to me!Tammy wrote:>Do we have to have protein shakes? Thanks for all the info Eleanor and I will keep this in mind. By the way, I am an adult, hehe, I am 28.
