Guest guest
I've only made one trip on SCD. It was for one week, and I just packed enough food in my cooler to last that long. The only 2 things I ate that weren't mine were a hamburger at a family member's house, and a steak from Outback Steakhouse. It was remarkably easy to do! Guest guest
I've only traveled in my car with my travel cooler full of SCD food. I have been to Israel a few years back (before SCD). There was always fresh fruits and vegetables to eat. I'm sure one could get fresh fish, steak, eggs prepared in restaurants for you. I haven't ventured out by airplane yet. I think once you are advanced on the diet enough for fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts, it is probably doable. PJ > > > I am at a point in my life where I want to travel... see the world. Guest guest
Hi , I think traveling includes these issues: 1) how healed you are (can you take the chance of getting dysentery while away? Can you take the chance on eating out if something that seems legal/the restaurant tells you is legal turns out not to be 100% okay?) 2) where you're traveling to in terms of if that type of culture is amenable to SCD cooking, or if you can find a restaurant to just make you plain steak or fish 3) are you going to a place by driving so you can carry more food w. you or are you flying and you'd need to really plan ahead on how much/what type of food. Good luck w. figuring it out. These are some of the things that came to the top of my mind reading your question. Certainly not an end, just a start to this discussion! Guest guest
Since I've been SCD I've traveled to the Philippines, Hong Kong and Vietnam (I live in DC). The " trick " for me has been to travel places where I know people. In the Phils I stayed with my best friend's family and they had a cook who they told what to make. I also brought some almond flour and made some muffins and cookies while there. Hong Kong I just brought food with me and had plain meat (when I was still eating meat) and veggies in restaurants. My parents live in Vietnam so I stayed with them there and used their kitchen to cook. I did venture out to Cambodia for a couple days. For breakfast I had fruit and had the hotel cook (since brekkie was included in the stay) prepare a couple hard boiled eggs. I would eat one or two and bring the rest with me for lunch (along with something like lara bars as snacks). I had a fridge in my room so when I was in Vietnam I made a bunch of chicken stuff and froze it for the flight to Cambodia and then put it in the fridge when I got there and used it for dinner and occasionally lunch. I definitely end up losing weight when I travel and it's probably not just because I'm walking everywhere! I think that the next time I venture overseas I might not be staying with people I know so I'll be looking for an apartment that I can rent for a couple days (it's an option that I found out about when looking for places to stay in Scotland) or looking into a B&B where I can talk to the person cooking the breakfast. Oh, has anyone been to the SCD B&B's? I'm so curious about them. Oh and as for the flights themselves? The last couple times I've gone I've brought hard boiled eggs, a banana or two, some SCD cookies, maybe some kind of bar like lara bars and (something I can't do now) jerky. I found some that seemed to be SCD legal at the farmer's market. I talked to the guys selling it and they said they didn't put anything in it. Of course I don't eat that junk anymore so next time I'll probably take that out and instead bring some nuts or something. One of the things that does kill me about being on this diet though is not being able to eat the local cuisine. I've lived overseas most of my life and part of the joy of traveling for me was experiencing the local culture through their food. True, some fruits and veg do taste a little different when you travel but it's not quite the same thing. I always feel really bad when people offer me food and I have to turn them down....especially because in the countries I tend to travel to it can taken as an insult. I say " food allergy " but you can tell people still feel kind of bad. As a " funny " aside...when I was in the Phils I had people tell me on two separate occasions (and from different backgrounds - Filipino and Italian) that they " pity " me or, " if I had your diet, I would kill myself. " Traveling with friends who understood the diet and why I'm on it certainly helped. They made me laugh about situations like that one. Mind, I'm not insulted at all by what they said. I can see where they're coming from and I understand the cultural background enough not to be insulted. It's the same way as in Vietnam if someone said " oh, your husband is ugly, " it's not meant as any kind of insult and isn't taken that way by anyone familiar with the culture (more a statement of fact??) so definitely familiarize yourself with the place you'll be going first. Entirely too long of a response Stacey > > > I am at a point in my life where I want to travel... see the world. Guest guest
Hi , > > How do you travel with SCD?? Where do you find the foods you can eat? There has got to be a way.... I've done a bit of traveling on SCD: Colorado (stayed with family), Cayman Islands (condo), Baja Mexico (condo/driving/brought own groceries), Mammoth Mountain (hotel w/fridge & microwave), and several overnight weekend trips. I've limited myself to locations that I know have readily accessible meats and vegetables and have unfortunately not felt ready to go to countries where rice and beans are the mainstay like mainland Mexico, Latin America, etc., or southeast Asia. That's been kind of a bummer because we used to travel into those areas a lot before I had UC, but I hope to be able to return there sometime. My basic " must-haves " are to bring yogurt and some yogurt starter in case my yogurt gets lost or something, muffins, and pecan butter brownies. For my flights, I always grill up some chicken breasts ahead of time and freeze them then put those, a couple hard-boiled eggs, cheese, apple, banana, brownie, sometimes even some cold cooked veggies like asparagus or carrots into a gallon ziploc, along with an extra empty quart ziplock. I keep ice or a blue-ice pack in the ziplock until right before security when I throw it away. After security, I go to a fast-food place in the airport and fill my quart bag with ice for the flight (unless I plan to eat soon after boarding, then it's not really necessary to get more ice). I always get a condo if it's going to be more than 2-3 days so I can shop and cook. I bring mini-baggies of spices with me and some easy recipes. So far, I've had pretty good luck eating out but again, I've stayed places where the language and culture are similar to here, and I usually end up at the higher-end restaurants since they're more likely to be making fresh food from scratch. So - travelling can be done. It just requires more advance planning than you're used to! And ... I echo the sentiment that it would be a good idea to be pretty well healed and stable on SCD before doing any major traveling in case your system gets hit with some unfamiliar flora. Even going to Cayman twice, I found that there is enough difference in the local food and water (even drinking bottled water) that my system gets a little off. Of course, that happened even before I ever had UC and I know it happens to most people - so that's an additional consideration beyond our conditions. Where are you thinking of traveling?
