Guest guest
bel, Thanks for the heads up! is hyper enough right now with probable gut bugs and addition of enzymes. Maybe I beter settle him down first then try out the EPO. Guest guest
bel, Did you use the capsules or liquid form of Eye-Q? [ ] EFA's /EyeQ Dear Suzanne, I recently trialled my daughter on EyeQ which unfortunately made her more hyper/stimmy, disrupted her sleep pattern and gave her diarrhoea ( this was the second trial with the same result) She tolerates cod liver oil ( which contains EPA and DHA ) so I suspect it is the Evening Primrose Oil in Eyeq that causes the problem ( I trialled EPO alone some time ago - pre enzymes - and she couldn't tolerate it then ) So before you switch to EyeQ for Nordic Naturals you may want to trial a little EPO alone to make sure she tolerates it Regards, bel
Guest guest
bel, Why dont you write an email to Equazen adressing it to the Director( www.equazen.com) and highlight the problems. I am sure he would like to hear if you are experiencing any problems and I am sure will be able to help. Theoretically, the hyper/stimmy behaviour shouldnt be happening ....nor the disrupted sleep patterns and definately diarrhea. So let us know what he says. Guest guest
Dear bel I have been forwarded your message, and as the manufacturer of eye q, I felt inclined to reply. You have expressed three areas in which there seems to be a negative reaction to our supplement, and I will tackle each in turn. I will be making general comments on reactions we have seen, but please do not interpret these as a medical diagnosis of your daughter: these are our observations. Firstly, you mention increased hyperactivity. This is something that we have seen on rare occasions, sometimes after about two to three weeks on eye q. The explanation I have been given for this is that the functional fatty acid EPA is starting to kick in, doing its good work of assisting neuronal blood flow and generally making the communication pathways more efficient in the brain. The result, as one doctor said to me, is that `the lights get switched on.' Its almost as if the child is making up for lost time, and you can see bouts of silly/hyper behaviour. It is hard for us to advise parents to be patient, but what we do see is that if they do perservere and stay the course, this difficult period eventually ends, and then the real benefits of HUFA supplementation invariably result. I do have to emphasise that this reaction is more unusual than usual, and can be more pronounced if a child is on stimulant medication. Secondly, you mention disrupted sleep. I can only assume that this is in some way connected with the above reaction, because eye q – with its EPA and GLA (which converts to DGLA) – provides the raw material for anti-inflammatory prostaglandins. These hormone-like elements have a range of positive roles, and one of them is helping you drop off to sleep, and to wake up in the morning. We are often contacted by parents thanking us for helping them have their first night of continuous sleep for many years because their child is suddenly snoozing through the night! So what you have seen is by no means typical, and I do not have any real explanation. Thirdly, in some instances, we have seen loose stools as a result of people taking our oils. Usually, making sure you take the supplement with food resolves this. We advise to reduce the dosage until the diarrhea goes away, and then gradually increase while constantly monitoring for any tummy upsets. But in the main, we have found our oils to be well tolerated by autistic children, who as we know, often have gut problems. So I do not think that the reactions you have seen would be from the EPO component in eye q. Can you tell me what dosage you have been giving and in what format (liquid or caps?) The final point that I would like to make is that our physiologies are all different, and so certainly we will see a range of reactions to fatty acid supplementation. So when one sees reactions, be they positive or negative, its crucial to make adjustments etc until you find the right balance for yourself or your child. The main problem we do encounter is that people usually need more rather than less of our omega-3 and omega-6 oils. Kind regards Adam Kelliher > bel, > > Why dont you write an email to Equazen adressing it to the Director ( www.equazen.com) and highlight the problems.
