Guest guest
- To get an overall sense of the demand for hired farm labor, you should contact two sources. First, the Shasta County Agricultural Commissioner is a valuable source of informaiton. Their office produces an annual Crop and Livestock Report summarizing crop and livestock production (acreage, production, value, etc.), and also is responsible for oversight of compliance with pesticide regulations. In the latter context, all users of registered materials (pesticides) have to file an annual permit or Operator ID Number. That is the most comprehensive list of commercial growers and their corresponding crops and acreage, with contact telephone numbers that one can find. Calls to perhaps a dozen of the larger ones will give you a lot of information about labor demand. Also, Agricultural Inspectors from the Commissioner's office regularly visit farm operators and are very knowledgeable about prevailing agricultural and employment practices. Finally, the Ag Commissioner or one of the Deputies would be most helpful in providing an overall sense of what is going on, and can refer you to other knowledgeable parties. A second source of summary information regarding the employment of hired farm workers can be found from the Labor Market Information Division of the Employment Development Department. The data for Redding MSA (Shasta County) is available on-line at the following URL: http://www.calmis.cahwnet.gov/file/es202/CEW-Major.cfm Click on " view detail " under the heading " Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing. " You'll find that about 83% of hired farm worker employment is in the " Ornamental Nursery Products " industry. If you have any questions about interpreting the data, please let me know. Guest guest
: Call Shepherd at the National Center for Farmworker Health Monday, 512-312-2700. He can provide you with a Migrant Health Center Directory that includes California. He may also be able to get you listings for Migrant Education. You could also ask him for the California State Association for Community and Migrant Health Centers. Good Luck.
