Guest guest
I don't understand all the contraversy about having a Pre-op Psychological Evaluation. WLS is a major procedure and an even more major life long commitment. In my case, not only did Dr. Keshishian require an evaluation, but my insurance required several professional evaluations. Prior to approval, I not only needed a full physical and recommendation from my PCP, but I was required to see a cardiologist, an endocrinologist, and a phychologist. These evaluations are for the patient's protection as well as protecting the insurance company and WLS surgeon from approving surgery for a patient who may have medical or psychological issues that need to be addressed prior to WLS. These evaluations were not more than a formality for me. I have yearly physicals and therefore had no surprises when the results of my labs and xrays were completed. My psych evaluation focused primarily on my understanding of the possible risks and complications. We also addressed the lifelong commitment that I have to make following a WLS procedure. None of this was a surprise either since Dr. Keshishian spelled out all of these things at my initial consultation. My advise to all pre-ops is to just go with the flow. You have to jump through a few hoops for both the insurance company and your chosen WLS surgeon. When you finally get the approval and have your procedure, I can tell you that all those hoops will fade to being inconsequential. As the surgery starts doing its magic and you begin losing the weight, you'll realize that all of the pre-op tests were worth the hassels. I'm 6 weeks post-op, have lost about 45 pounds and more improtantly I can see and feel bones I forgot I had. Everyone I know who I've seen since my surgery are amazed at the transformation that is already visible. Seeing the pride and pleasure from my family and friends make it all worth the hurdles and obstacles I had to overcome. So relax, and think positive thoughts. You will be much less stressed if you relax and quit fighting the red tape. I wish all pre-ops (and the post-ops) the best.
