Guest guest
I was too at first! But you have to work yourself up to the usual 6 pills a day gradually. I still only take 4 or 5 - and you have to balance it with your diet. If I eat more fiber then I tend to lessen the dose a little. Listen to your body - it will help you feel what is right for you. No doc I know acutally has any real advice on fiber other than to just take it. If you get a lot of gas or such then back off the dosage and/or try a different brand. I take the Citrucil rather than the Metamucil...but both come in pills and is a lot easier to deal with than the drink stuff. It helps by bulking up the stools and therefore making them less loose and frequent. But in a way it seems illogical and I can't disagree with that - seems it should make you go more. But it doesn't - as long as you're not overdoing it. You must also make sure to drink plenty of water as well when taking fiber.

I'm not a very good water drinker. Can't drink juices. I had a doctor tell me to take two huge tablespoons of Metamucil every morning. I could not get even one down. And tummy hurt terribly afterwards. I just never took it again. I did not know there were pills. The few times I am brave enough to get out and shop to see what is new....I'm in such a hurry because of chances of accidents. I also heard on tv about a new product made by Monistat that is a 'powder gel' to use for chaffing? I wonder if that would be worth a try on the...well....the " burns " from too many trips? Thanks so much for your help!!! Oh yes, does it help to take something like Gas-X if the fiber is bothering? nancy j ---------- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Guest guest
I do take the gas pills when necessary...but if you think the gas is caused by the fiber then ease up on it....it literally takes a few weeks to adjust to increasing dosages. Try the probiotic and food enzymes. And do yourself a favor - read up on digestion and causes of problems like gas. It can make a huge difference. Things that can also trigger problems are wheat, salt and sugar. I hadn't mention them before...but everyone is different....and the effect can vary alot depending on the amount and the combination. Another thing I've beend doing is watching my food combinations.....like eating fruit alone, and not mixing it with other foods. I don't eat nearly as much portion wise at a sitting, and also have reduced meat consumption. There is sooo much variety in food out there to try that it's an adventure rather than a hardship. As for water....how about trying some herbal teas? I know I never cared for the celestial seasoning kind but the yogi and tazo teas are good and good for you. For the burns the best thing is really still a sitz bath. It helps to soak and eases the pain. I used to use more of the butt paste, aquaphor and other creams but they tend to cause bacteria to collect which can cause problems as well. Use it only as much as you need to for comfort. Another one I found that was " approved " for use was the calmoseptine...but be warned - it does have a little menthol in it....not something for badly irritated skin. I use it on occassion in combination with a barrier cream from convetec which I think is really good. Hope this helps. Keep trying.

Guest guest
In my situation, fiber does help me. I cramp and hurt without it. I take some other medicine to slow down things too. Miracles happen! Guest guest
What has really been working for me is diet. I do take two metamucil with 8 oz water in the morning and then mostly have a slice of whole wheat toast with applesauce. For a snack, it's a banana. On the lists for people who have been reconnected. I am not really enjoying food at all..maybe that is why I have lost so much weight; I hardly eat at all and almost never past 7 anymore. karima Re: Fiber In my situation, fiber does help me. Guest guest
Karima, my mother (rectal cancer, reconnected last August) is losing weight too, she doesnt have much of an appetite, but keeps saying she eats enough. She eats teensy portions though. After the surgery she was 44 pounds for months, this spring she is steadily losing, now weighs 134. She's on a watermelon and yogurt kick lately, cant get enough. She had alot more problems in the months after the surgery then she's having now, but she does still have problems, mostly with constipation, then it'll switch to diarrhea for a bit, she's pretty disgusted with trying to eat so that she's normal, she's disgusted with it all. ~Dianna Barbara Gari karima1@...> wrote:What has really been working for me is diet. Guest guest
Yes, I feel for your mom. (forgot her name). The only thing I really enjoy is ice cream. And since I don't want to be running to the pot all night, no food after 7 for me and that is a lot of the weight coming off. I was a monster grazer. Your mom is how old???? Yogurt and watermelon sounds good to me. I tried eating cantaloupe and zipped right on through me. Tell your mom, she is not alone in her disgustedness. Guest guest
Mom's name is Lillian, she'll be 85 on the 18th of this month, she would probably LOVE to talk to you (but not here, she wont touch a computer). Yes, I'm glad she's into the warermelon and yogurt, she also loves Dove Bars. She sleeps most of the day and is up until 2 am usually, her and my sister, also with cancer who lives with her, are night owls, always have been. I'll give mom your message for sure. I'm going there tomorrow to get her to try these hearing aids Donelle sent to me for her. Cross your fingers. ~Dianna Barbara Gari karima1@...> wrote:Yes, I feel for your mom. (forgot her name). Guest guest
What was Elaine's advice about how much (SCD) fiber one should eat in a day? Also, since it's come up quite a few times lately, what were her thoughts about maintaining the body Ph., if any. TIA, Mara
