Guest guest
- isn't that just the way? You know, I'm thinking that maybe if Duffy becomes outspoken about her fight with the disease, Hollywood may see her as more of a liability than an asset. Sad, but probably very true. I'm sure being an actor or actress comes with a lot of challenges, the most difficult would be keeping their image and career on track. I, like you, am very disappointed that she doesn't want to promote NS, but I'm sure there will be others. With the foundation, every year we do a HUGE event concerning breast cancer awareness, with guest speakers, survivors, etc... What we've found is that it is most difficult for patients-survivors to "come out" and speak about their disease because they just don't want people pitying them or having their person being a symbol of the disease (I know I'm not saying that right - but I can't find the words, forgive me!). They want to be known for themselves rather than as, "that lady over there with the breast cancer." Plus to some, if they speak about it, they fear that somehow they'll be making the disease worse in their body. It's kind of silly when you really think about, but it is a very real fear. When someone is sick or suffering, sometimes it's very difficult to open up to more "wounds" like that, so to speak. With someone like Duffy, her life is always in the limelight. Maybe she just needs to shine about the good, positive or "fame" things in her life and handle the suffering in private. I can kind of identify with wanting all the good in me to be what others see. I kind of feel bad for her as much as I do disappointed in her, you know? It's too bad. But don't let it get you down. Someday someone will speak out and someday more will be done. It's just a nasty waiting game. In the beginning, my doctor (Boy Wonder) told me that there are so few people with this disease that there is virtually no real study about it - i.e., the pharmaceutical companies don't see NS as a "cash cow," therefore they don't concentrate their efforts on healing or finding relief from this disease. It's a sad commentary, isn't it? So we're like guinea pigs at the mercy of the whims of science, it would seem. I'm just glad we all have each other to lean on and support. Everyone is such a blessing to me. Your recommendation alone that I contact your neurologist opened a world of hope to me. I can't thank you enough for that. You care. It's the people in this world who care that truly make all the difference. You did more for me in one email than my neurologist has done for me in over three years! That means everything to me! Hang tight, cookie. Don't let things get you down. Better days HAVE to be ahead - after all, the only way is up!
