Guest guest
Again, sorry to cross post, but I need some clarification. My son currently only gets speech therapy via the school district, which is not good. I pulled him from the local speech therapy (private) because I did not think it was helpful, and we are doing ABA, and the two were against each other. My son, though, does not have good language, in that he does not use full sentences, and basically isn't interested. I feel he may actually need language therapy instead of speech therapy. Any suggestions? Trina
Guest guest
How old is your son? I don't think the school is giving you everything your entitled too. Look into the I.E.P. for your state and see what your entitled too and demand it. I'm not sure if it's the same for the whole country or different for each state but my son speaks pretty well now and they have him taking speech and language therapy to make sure they do as much as they can now while he is young. He is 5 and in kindergarten. Good luck. There is a website that lists what the I.E.P. standards are and I got it from someone on this group so if you need it ask because someone out there has it. Guest guest
I believe speech thrapy is absolutely INVALUABLE if you have a child with language delays. Maybe you need to look around for a therapist that you would be happier with --try to get your ins. to cover it etc. Schools usually dont have very experienced people. As far as sppech/ adn ABA being against one another, I feel so angry about this because everyone you go to wants you to use their therapy only. Tired of the BIG TIME ego problems, money sucking attempts rather than really thinking about what is best for our children--most of these agencies etc could care less. The more hours you do with them, the more money they make. I told the occupational therapist that first threw me the red flag that my son may be autistic, that my son was responding wonderfully to the diet and he had many things going on inside of that need to be addressed that are improving him etc. Here I also have him in every therapy available including OT and she became defensive and said that it was probably due to the therapies that her company was providing etc. Major ego--obviously I wouldnt being slaving my a-- off to get him to all these therapies if I didnt believe they are valuable(but they are effective because my son is finally clear headed and knows what the heck someone is saying to him). My point: Watch for the ego's and money hungry behavior and determine what your son needs and if one therapist doesnt work find another!! Most of us will go thru a few therapists per therapy. speech vs language therapy > Again, sorry to cross post, but I need some clarification.
