Guest guest
Sorry about your episode. I put Zithromycin on my list of allergies because I got severely dehydrated and a high fever after taking it for bronchitis. Ended up having a 5 day hospital stay as a result and it was confirmed that I had pneumonia. Now, the question is did I already have the makings of pneumonia before the drug or did the drug cause serious side effects which progressed the course of the infection. My guess has been the latter since I've never had a problem with any other antibiotic and I've had chronic bronchitis for years without pneumonia. I hope you get the answers you need. Feel better soon ! bug

Guest guest
Thanks, I do have a fever now, which I didn't have before taking the medication. Now I'm wondering if the seizure was because I'm getting the flu? Too bad I can't just " take a few days' rest " , although I hope I won't be forced to... They were sure I had some kind of bacterial infection, because my glands are swollen, and I felt better for two days, now I feel worse. And I have had problems with many antibiotics, though usually not erythromycin type ones. It is really cold here in the Northeast now, and the humidity is way down in the house, that probably doesn't help... Take care, RH > > Sorry about your episode. Guest guest
Barbara, I don't really have an answer for you, but since it happened on your weak side it may have to do with the mito. The reason I say this is because of 2 incidents that happened to my mother and sister. Back in 1988, before any of us had heard of the word MELAS, my mother and father were bringing my car to me after I came back from a short Army Reserve two week trip to Germany. They lived about 100 miles from me. On the way down my mothers right arm started shaking as if in a seizure. She was on epilepsy medication at the time because she had been blacking out and falling for the last 10 years or so. Anyhow, it did not stop for about a day. No one really figured it out because she later had a full fledged seizure and a coma and died. My sister on the other hand had a similiar thing happen after she came out of a two week coma. This is after she was diagnosed with melas. The doctor said it was a combination of the brain telling the arm to move but it couldn't the way it was supposed to because it was too weak. Something like that--I do not remember exactly since it was back in 1996. Anyway, I got the impression it was kind of like when I would try to do push ups and my legs started shaking because I was so tired. She had in 1994 had the kind of seizure where your arms and legs are going all over according to her husband. Janet S Twitching, seizure, ??? I had a bad seizure-like episode tonight. Before it, I ended up doing some stupid stuff and being angry for little or no reason, and was worried I would hurt someone or myself. I felt weak, and laid down. My arm started jerking uncontrollably - if I tried to stop it, my shoulder and arm would jerk harder. This lasted about 15 minutes. It occurred on my " bad side " , where I have residual weakness and neuropathy. I would have thought it was a bad tic or twitching, but now I'm wondering if I was having an " aura " beforehand, and was acting irrationally. I have some residual weakness, and it took me about an hour to resolve the mental symptoms. So I'm wondering if it was a focal seizure, or just severe twitching (my arm was jumping more than 6 inches off the bed), or a variant of myoclonus. I'm concerned because I just started some new medication, Zithromax, for bronchitis, and I know that erythromycin has been implicated in mito damage, but up until possibly now, I've been okay with Zithromax. Anyone have problems with Zithromax? I've had EEG's, brain MRI's, and two 48 hour EEG's, but they didn't find any evidence of epilepsy. Guest guest
Thanks for the info, although I don't have the specific MELAS deletions, I do have " MELAS phenotype " , which means my symptoms are almost the same. Probably MELAS with a different deletion " special " to me. That's only my second seizure ever, at least second " major " one. I'm hoping they stay to less than one per year (that's the criteria for " seizure-free " , isn't it?). I had my other seizure when I first tried Carnitor - then I found out seizures are a possible side effect Luckily I was at home at the time, although I was alone so thank goodness there weren't complications. So I wonder if my carnitine level is getting messed up, either by being sick or being on so many meds at the moment. Guest guest
Hope you continue to not have seizures. Although my mother probably had MELAS, my sister was diagnosed with it and my son and I both have it, my son and I have very mild symptoms. In 1997 when I was doing some initial testing at the medical college in Milwaukee I had a spectroposy which measures lactic acid and showed signs of seizures. I actually can only remember 3 times in my life when I blacked out and fainted, similiar to what my mother used to do. I am sure there are more times when I blacked out but did not notice. I have never had the kind of seizure with arms or legs moving thou to the best of my knowledge. My son gets the abscence seizures where all of a sudden he will just be staring when you are talking to him as if in a day dream. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference. I do not know the criteria for seizure free--my sister had to be certified in late 1995 by her physician to get her drivers license back after her coma in 1994. As far as my drivers license is concerned--I have never mentioned anything about the MELAS. I do wear a medical necklace with the MELAS and diabetes warning though. Another wierd thing is that my mother was only diet control diabetes at 49 and my sister was not diabetic at all at 33. I have been prediabetic since 18 and on medication since 33. I think it has to do with body weight and metabolism. They were both 5 ft 105 lbs and I was like 125-130 most of my life. Guest guest
A friend of mine had a similar experience where she went out of her head and *misbehaved* so to speak (she got really angry and did some stupid stuff too). It turned out to be seizure related. (she has seizures). She is not a mito, or at least not diagnosed as one tho I suspect..... ohgminion rakshasis@...> wrote: I had a bad seizure-like episode tonight. Guest guest
Maybe myoclonic, I was conscious, but couldn't move the rest of my body. I definitely was feeling ill before it, so luckily was laying down. No, I haven't called the neurologists office. I guess I didn't want to say " By the way, after I saw you on Monday and I showed such good strength, I got really wasted from all the neurological tests and went home to have a seizure. " But I suppose I should tell her. I just had a brain MRI about two months ago, and an EEG shortly before that. My mito doc was " yelling " at me to get my mastoiditis followed up, because I have unsymmetrical acoustic reflexes, I hoping that's not causing any brain involvement. Of course I'm sure this is stress- related too - my younger son just had his ammonia and lactate/pyruvate tested, and he behaved so these results should stick - we'll know if he " probably has mito " or not. Last time, he had a fit for almost 10 minutes before the test, so high lactate was not considered reliable... Oh, and I just finished my calculations for my dissertation, and am finalizing my defense date. I have a mental health break scheduled for March some time Thanks to all of you for your input and caring on this; I have absence seizures sometimes, but these " real " seizures (or myoclonic seizures?) are much more annoying. Guest guest
((((HUGS)))))) Can I come too on the mental health break? A little trip to Hawaii maybe?! We could let cabana boys wave palm leaves over us, and since it is all a " mental " health break we can have perfect figures, and have energy and time to go shopping for the perfect swimsuit and be able to eat all the chocolate we want. Ah yes. sounds good to me! LOL. Hey, one day of staying home and eating chocolate and playing Sims2 on the computer would be good for me . ohgminion rakshasis@...> wrote: I have a mental health break scheduled for March some time Take care, RH
Guest guest
The most I can expect for my mental health break is to be able to sleep 8 hours, take the kids to school and daycare, then sleep for another 8 hours, then pick them up again. Believe me, nothing more than that. If I'm really lucky, I might get to go out for dinner... Vacation is a bit of a sore point for us lately - my husband has three weeks of vacation, and is told to " use it all up " each year. But I don't have a job yet, so he might just spend time sleeping around the house for vacation. We have pets, so it's a hassle to even go away for a day or two, let alone longer. I may not even get vacation during my first year of work... Guest guest
Vacation, what is that? I haven't had one for 13 years, at least not what I would call one anyway. The closest I have come in 13 years is going to a few of the UMDF conferences. Sad, that is me. I do hope you get SOME kind of break, as I know we all need them, even if it is for only a day at a time. You have to try to take care of you so you can be their for your family. ohgminion wrote: >The most I can expect for my mental health break is to be able to >sleep 8 hours, take the kids to school and daycare, then sleep for >another 8 hours, then pick them up again. Guest guest
Yeah I know what you mean. I reserved a night away in a cabin for January 6-7 this year last September, where we would go up on my boyfriend's birthday (the 6th) and come back on my birthday, (the 7th). Well, it was already paid for, I had everything arranged, and then my grandmother broke my hip, so I got it replanned to have everything covered while I was gone, then Sharlene died, and I had to redo all my plans to get it covered again, then the night before, my friend Jeanne got sick and couldnt stay with my grandmother, so I had to REDO it again at the last minute! and instead of getting away early afternoon one day, and coming back late morning the next, we didnt get up there till 8:30 at night, and I had to leave at 7:30 in the morning! All that work to get away for about 15 and a half hours, including traveling time......... The stuff about Hawaii was meant to be a reference to daydreaming which is about the only way I could get away for a vacation really! My REAL idea of a vacation would just be an entire day at home on the computer relaxing, doing nothing, and with my cell phone off! LOL (((((HUGS))))) I DO know where you are coming from...... Btw I have worked at the same place for over three years. We dont get paid vacation time there if we are hourly wage, just salary people do. Heck we cant claim any hours even if we work them if it makes us go over forty hours, we dont get paid time and a half for holidays (such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's) which I work all the time, every year, and we dont get such niceties as Christmas bonuses or paid vacations or sick days or..... you get the drift. Medical insurance is also laughable. This is the reality of home health. And then they wonder why they cant draw good quality people to the field! And we do all this for a measly 7.50 an hour! Ironically enough, Mt. Nebo and the fiasco it was, was the closest I have had to a vacation since over a year before Rick died, so we are talking since 2001. My day consists of working 12-14 hours a day, seven days a week. I dream of having 1 DAY off, just one......... I work sick or well, crash or no crash, chest hurting or not. Sometimes so sick from a crash I have to drag myself out of bed, and consume caffeine just to make it out of the door. Did I mention my kidneys hate caffeine and I used to avoid it like the plague? I have to take extra coq just to function, except I ran out of the good stuff like two months ago, and am taking cheap stuff... part of the time.... and dont have the money to replace it with the good stuff. Which means I am now leaking potassium, which means I have leg cramps and my chest hurts on a semi-regular basis. Did I mention I now am overworking because life requires it, and fear the price that will be exacted from me via my body at a later date? Something I would really worry about if I had time to really worry, and wasnt so exhausted that I can sleep anyway.....I fear having a crash or getting so sick, I cant function, because what happens then? Not just to me, but all the people whose very lives/quality of life depend on me to function? I guess someone else would fill the gap, much like I had to fill Sharlene's, a gap that is still a huge gaping emotional hole, and a void as far as need that still hasnt been completely filled in. I miss her, on several levels. I often think, I need to call her to let her know such and such, because only Sharlene would understand.....Then I realize, with sadness, that I cant. Believe me, I DO understand..... With many (((((HUGS)))) ohgminion rakshasis@...> wrote: The most I can expect for my mental health break is to be able to sleep 8 hours, take the kids to school and daycare, then sleep for another 8 hours, then pick them up again. Guest guest
We all have rough times, but I don't envy what you're going through. Know that we're all thinking about you, mito's bad enough without other issues making it harder to bear. I remember when my daughter had pneumonia a few weeks ago, I was in the Emergency Room with her, and my husband was home with the other kids. I wondered " What if something happens to me while I'm trying to get her taken care of? " Thoughts of my friends at knowing what I go through has helped me through tough times. That is also helping me now, as I wait to find out if my 4-year-old son is affected too. I hope you'll be able to squeeze in some more rest time, I guess it is hard to run your life with all that going on, but your job etc. will have to wait if you are in the hospital, so don't let it get to that.
