Guest guest
Dear Elsie (in Texas), >I was just curious what your thoughts (If you don't mind sharing) are regarding the >vaccine/autism connection. Please forgive me if I'm being intrusive. I was wondering >what your viewpoint might be from a parent who has done a lot of research, and that has >been living with autism for the length that you and your family have. Did your son have >vaccines? Last question first: Yes, our son did have vaccines prior to his autistic development. This did not, however, start very abruptly. Instead, we had a gradual realisation over weeks or months that something undefinable had gone wrong. His first dose of MMR vaccine was given on Nov 26 1984, and our first serious talks about " problems " took place shortly before Christmas that year. (At that stage, we thought that the nanny was to blame - she was not very energetic or stimulating...). However, when we look back, we think that we can recall a few odd details from his first year that are probably related to the peptide problem, but that did not, at that stage, take on any kind of significance to us. Our wievpoints about vaccines ? We are very weary about them, not so much because of our own research or experience, but because of Shattock's stern warnings. knows far more about these things than we do. When he says he is apprehensive, we become nervous, too. We're lucky enough to have three NT children, are not going to take any risks witht any of them. When our older daughter (now 15) was to have her third dose of MMR vaccine, my wife (who is an MD by the way) insisted that she have an antibody test first, to find out whether the dose was really needed. We found out that the antibodies against measles and mumps were OK, but those against Rubella were not, so we gave her a single rubella vaccine instead of the combined MMR cocktail. We're going to follow the same procedure for our younger daughter (10). So we're not totally against vaccinations. We're more sceptical about Measles vaccine than about the others. Our interpretation of the vaccine / autism theories are that the problems are caused by EITHER: The giving of vaccines to people whose antibodies are already high: This could cause an abnormal reaction OR: The giving of several kinds of vaccines all at once, causing a kind of overload on the immune system OR BOTH. >Are there mandatory vaccines in Norway (my sweet grandmother was from Oslo by the >way)? For the time being, we think that only the Tuberculosis (BCG) vaccine is mandatory here. However, unless the parents protest, all children are routinely vaccinated against Polio, Tetanus, Diphteria, Pertussis (DPT vaccine), and Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR vaccine). >I realize that there are many, many variables to all the things that lead our children to this >diagnosis, and there are kids who never had vaccines that are on the spectrum. Just >thinking that it seems there would be some common denominator somewhere in all the >jumble of genetics, crappy immune system, environmental toxins/vaccines, virals, etc., or >just a combination of all these things. I guess that would be the million dollar question that >every parent, researcher, scientist and medical professional, that has had autism touch >their lives in some way, is trying to answer. Anyway, just curious what you think, and hope >you might share your thoughts. We think that autism is caused by several things going wrong, if not at once, then at least together in some kind of ways. Some people have high peptide levels without getting too lost in autistic development. Some people have immune dysfunctions or persistent fungus infections without becoming autistic. The genetic factors that are related to autism do not always cause autism. We think that autistic development is probably due to one or more vicious circles: In people who are predisposed for this disorder, it doesn't take too much to get such vicious circles going, and once they are established, they are self supporting and very, very difficult to get out of. For the time being, I don't have time to scan the entire GFCFkids mailbox every day for subjects that I'm able to help with. However, I search the mailbox for my name every day. So, if you want to get my attention, please remember to put my name somewhere in the message text. Don't put it in the heading, because I only search the text.
