Hi Kim,

I am very surprised to hear that Athena is doing FRESH muscle biopsies. This is

the first time I heard about them doing this.

Do they state what tests they are performing on the fresh biopsy?

Has anyone on the list had their Fresh muscle biopsy sent to Athena for testing?

I had a paper from Athena that had everything listed that they test for and so

forth. I got it when I was at the UMDF Convention in Pitts. but threw it out

because I knew I would never need it.

This is definitely a surprise to me. I only hope they have improved their

record.

I'm sure you're right, but I just found an on-line form for fresh

muscle biopsy samples, for the lab where mine was done.

I'll just have to wait until the next time I talk to my doc to find

out, but I'm hopeful.

Thanks for the help.

Anne-Marie,

My biopsy wasn't done at Athena. It was done at Hospital /

Washington University in St Louis. After they did their testing, a

sample was sent out to Athena.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear.

WUSTL certainly has an *excellent* biomedical reputation, so I

wouldn't be surprised if they would be an addition to the list of

fresh muscle biopsy locations. Worth looking into.

Take care,

Kim,

Thanks for clearing that up. So Athena has some of your muscle biopsy, I wonder

whether it was fresh or frozen when the received it.

You may have already mentioned this but I might have missed your post: Do you

know what they are testing your muscle for at Athena Labs??

Thanks

Ann-Marie

I was told they ruled out the two more common forms of metabolic

disorders, and would test for the dozen or so less common forms.

Although I know my first biopsy from my shoulder didn't make it

clear if it was a GSD for sure or not. It was just PAS positive,

and a few other things. Hopefully this one will give us more

infomation.

Either I missed this or I'm blanking, what is " PAS positive " ? This

may be clear from the answer, but if not, is it specific to mito or

something else, or non-specific?

Thanks,

PAS - " periodic acid schiff " stain of the muscle sample. A positive

result means that glycogen is stored in the muscle. I don't know

other than that.
