We started our son on the diet almost a month ago, and the improvement has

been dramatic. There was no withdrawal, just WONDERFUL improvements in all

areas. Any slips are always obvious too. He was diagnosed by the ped. as

borderline Asbergers and by the neurologist as being slightly on the

autistic spectrum. Good eye contact, good speech, but ritual behavior, lack

of empathy, sensory issues, tactile defensiveness, rages, poor social

skills, etc.

Hope this helps.

--My son is only cf so far (2 weeks) and he hasn't had one craving.

He is allowed " ice cream " (toffutti) ever night but has not asked for

cheese once. The only withdrawal symptom I think I saw was he was a

bit more hyper the first few days. I was kind of wondering the same

thing because I read all thses posts about kids craving things like

addicts and I'm not getting that reaction at all from my son. Makes

me wonder if I really am on the right track.

I took Evan casein free twice a year before we finally went gfcf. I did not

see a difference so we stopped. Finally I heard Karyn Seroussi speak and

realized that Evan needed to go 100% with the full gfcf diet. We have not

seem complete recovery but we have seen a young boy who now participates

more with those at school, church and home. It is well worth it. Keep on

going and take out the gluten before you give up. Don't waste a couple of

years like I did. You may regret in two years. I do.

Hi Irene,

Austin doesn't seem to crave foods either. At least not like an addict type

craving. He has always loved chocolate and is happy when he gets " special "

chocolate. However, Austin did go through terrible withdrawal for about a

week. I think every kid reacts differently. I took Austin off both gluten

and casien on the same day. Also, I had help with the diet and in the

beginning dedicated one cupboard of food that was totally gluten and casien

free so that there were no slip ups.

> Did you do any other therapies, or metal detox for your son??

Hi ,

Austin's other big gain came with Auditory Integration Therapy. In fact, I

am going to put him through another round next month. When they did the

re-evaluation recently, he scored in the average range on the verbal testing

and superior level on the non-verbal testing. The psychologist said that he

suspects that Austin has an auditory processing concern. Simply put, he has

difficulty understanding what he hears. AIT made a huge difference the

first time and I am hoping that the second round will help with the rest.

In the mean time, being average isn't so bad -- right? (I say that because

his mom is average ;)

The doctor said once we help him with the auditory issues the scores will

come up to the superior range. His speech and language therapist has always

treated him as though he had an auditory processing issue.

Other therapies:

I put him on magnesuim and B6 the same week I started the diet. Later we

went to Super nu Thera.

Speech and Language (2x a week privately, 2x week at school)

Pragmatics Therapy (1x a week)

Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Sensory Integration Therapy (1x

week)

PPI classroom

Special School that has OT on Monday, PT on Tuesday, SLT on Wednesday,

Psychologist on Thursday (2.5 hrs a day)

We found bad bacteria (klebzyella) in the gut and treated that with Uva

Ursa. After years of diarreha, Austin is finally having normal BM's.

AIT helped him tremendously. But the diet was the thing that was absolutely

necessary to bring him back. The other therapies are much needed to regain

what Austin missed while he was 'lost to us.'

In the past, I have seen regression with the slightest infraction on the

diet. He is 100% gluten and casien free. Now that we have gotten rid of

the klebzyella, I am hoping that minor infractions will be tolerated. Time

will tell.

Rating the therapies

1) Diet & AIT

2) Vitamins (Super nu Thera, calcium) & Treating the gut for the klebzyella

3) SLT

4) PT, OT, SIT

We did one round of chelation but had to stop because Austin's levels of

calcium and other (good) metals were so low. We are building him up now in

preparation for chelation. However, he is doing so good that I am not sure

if we will go ahead with the chelation. We pulled out some arsenic and

antimony (fire retardant) with the first round. No mercury -- but our DAN

doctor said that it will probably take a couple of rounds to get it out.

: wow, what great results. Was your son over or underresponsive to

sounds, etc. i.e, did he cover his ears a lot, or not at all. I have heard

conflicting reports on AIT. I am glad you got a great outcome. Where do you

live, which DAN doctor do you go to? THanks,

Hi ,

In the beginning Austin seemed unresponsive to most sound -- except the mall

and the sound of the boat engine, applause. Any time we got on a boat or

went to a mall, he would have problems -- running off and uncontrollable.

With AIT, he became sound sensitive for a period. I believe he was actually

hearing correctly for the first time and it too a while to adjust.

We live in a small town north of Rochester, Michigan and see Dr. Ng.
