Guest guest
Darby, I am sorry that Dr. Mosca did not find that her foot could be corrected without surgery, as we all know there are some that just cannot and I am sure that Livi will do very well with the surgery. Is there any chance that Dr. Mosca would do the procedure? Keep us posted on how things go! Guest guest
Darby, Dang it. Not fun to hear your little one will need surgery I'm sure. We saw Dr. Mosca this week as well. We really liked him. He took so much more time with us and seemed to really care. We have decided to switch to Dr. Mosca.. however, Dr. Mosca did say that Schmale did do an excellent job with Weston's foot. Lori -------------- Original message -------------- I took Livi to Dr. Mosca today to get a 2nd opinion...Dr. Schmale had been talking surgery to open up Olivia's ankle capsule and I was questioning this action. Dr. Mosca was very nice and smart, but ultimately agreed with Dr. Schmale - he took the time to explain the technical side of things, which I really appreciated. He had wonderful things to say about the Ponseti method, but he said that we were at a point where the method would not necessarily help her - he said 95% of kids have no problems, but Olivia's achilles tendons are very tight on both feet, and it may be more than the tendon that is causing the tightness. He said they would not mess with anything else in her feet, just the back. Olivia has also been kicking out of her left shoe (the worse foot) at night, all the time. He suggested that we change the degree of rotation on the bar to 60 degrees to see if it helps keep them on - that way she'll stay in them but won't lose any more of the progress she's made in the other parts of her correction. So we go back to Schmale in a month and he will probably talk to us about scheduling the surgery. I guess they won't open the capsule unless once they get in there, they find it's necessary. I'm feeling better about it after talking to him and getting a second opinion from a known doc....but it obviously wasn't what I wanted to hear. Guest guest
Glad you liked Dr. Mosca, too! I believe we're going to stay with Schmale - to his credit per Dr. Mosca, he's also done a good job with her feet to this point- just maybe doesn't have his social skills up to par with his doctor abilities? That's ok- there are a lot of people who are the same way. I am going to ask him to get more in depth with explanations of what and why in the future... I appreciate being talked to as an intelligent adult who can understand basic medical terms about my baby's feet, instead of getting the " See Spot Run " version of things. You can tell from talking to Schmale that he is a smart guy. I guess since I'm pretty young some docs mistakenly think I don't care or don't understand. Anyhow, I ramble sometimes.... And it is such a good thing that you have confidence in your doctor, good for you for seeing Dr. Mosca for a second opinion! Give Olivia a hug from us and also, congrats on your pregnancy! Guest guest
I know it's not the news you wanted to hear but I am sure she'll be fine. Knowing your baby is having surgery is always harder on the parents then the child. I went through it twice once with each child. Olivia had tubes in her ears at 10mnths and Ava had her tenotomy (cord lengthening) under general at 9wks. That was unfortunatly before we started seeing Dr. Ponseti. What exactly is it that they are going to do? Lengthen the tendon? What else other then the tendon would be causing the tightness? KK Livi 01/22/03 Big " B " day coming up! Guest guest
People are so rude. When carrying Everett and swollen too big for my ring another mother at my older kid's school actually asked me if I was married....it was her tone of voice, kwim? Whether I was married or not while pregnant was absolutely none of her business and would it make me a horrible person if I were not? Geesh. s. Guest guest
My favorite (ya RIght) is the old ladies in the mall giving you the dirty looks. I did not wear my rings for fear that they would have to be cut off and my husband had longer hair than I did. Boy did we get nasty looks while shopping!!!! some people huh! Guest guest
Darby, It must be hard to hear that surgery is imminent but at least you know its coming from doctors who know what they are talking about. Mommy to (12-17-98) and Christian (1-30-04) LCF - DBB 23/7 _____ From: Darby Sent: Friday, January 07, 2005 3:04 PM To: nosurgery4clubfoot Subject: 2nd Opinion from Dr. Mosca today... I took Livi to Dr. Guest guest
I guess once a baby gets older (at what exact age they aren't sure) the ankle capsule (I'm still not sure what that is) can be causing the tightness, instead of the achilles tendon. Livi has already had a tenotomy at 4 months. I guess in some kids, the tenotomy helps the progress, but not drastically - and the foot will continue to be tight. At least, that's my recollection of the explanation I got. I still have some more questions to drill them on next time we go in.
