I was given a pill in ER for them once when I went in for red urine

and spasms. It worked well. I'm sorry I don't remember what it was

called.

HI Kim,

Thanks for the response. At least I know there is something out there that

helps with the spasms. Hopefully someone else on the list will know.

Hi as I'm sure you can tell by the time of my post that this is one of my

problematic nights as I was experiencing swelling of my feet again all day

yesterday and this was afrer taking two Lasix . A weight a gain of six pounds

yesterday now has progressed to the point that sleep is not to be had due to

lack of air again. I finally decided just to get up to see if that helped as

laying down just isn't in the picture. Now to your question, I definiely have

had this experience, at various times and several years ago the urologist I was

seeing prescribed Donnatal for my bladder spasms, he said it can be used for a

variety of problems including " motion sickness " ? When I was still able to work

the woman that was the Pharmacy Consultant for Kansas Medicaid suggested I try

Azo-Cranberry pills, they can be purchased at Walgreens or Wal-Mart in Topeka,

they also have what is called Azo-Gantrasin which has a " dye " that l have taken

on rare occasions, I am a firm believer in the

Azo-Cranberry. I hope this will be of some help to you. I am trying to regain

my energy back after a colon biopsy and a biopsy of my esophagus on the 23rd. I

also had heart tests done last tuesday which showed a leakage areound two of my

heart valves? I guess I'll hear on the heart tests his week and I have a

follow-up visit with Dr. Feagan on the 30th about the pathology results. I do

so hope you can find some relief from the bladder spasms as they are very

painful and I am speaking from first hand experience. At times I have also

tried using a heating pad. Good night and God Bless, Dolores

-Hi Ann Marie

Sorry to hear about the bladder spasms. I've had them since having

my last child and I thought they had something to do with my C-

section. But then I started taking domperidone for gastroparesis and

my bladder got better. Now I just have to make sure I go at regular

intervals and empty all the way. Still not ideal but hey it's better

than not making it to the potty! Domperidone didn't help my stomach

but now I don't want to stop it because of how great my bladder feels.

There's a medicine called pyridium that turns your urine orange and

acts as a local anesthetic. Good in a pinch but doesn't really fix

the problem.

Ditropan is for bladder spasms and donnatal is for everything

spasms. Any of those meds can cause constipation and urinary

retention so if that's a problem be careful.

If you're just starting to have problems you should consider seeing a

urologist. It wouldn't be helpful to have your doctors assume " mito

mito mito " for all symptoms when it could be something treatable.

Good luck!

Ann-Marie, I've had bladder spasms for years but they are related to my

interstitial cystitis which is a chronic inflammation of the bladder. I

don't take anything specifically for the spasms, just wait them out, being

cautious of meds in general.

Ann Marie,

Hi! I have had issues with bladder spasms. The urologist did

put my on Ditropan XL, but it can cause constipation, so I have to be

careful. I am on the lowest dose possible. This might not be the best

thing, but I am not running to the bathroom every 10 minutes anymore. I

just need to watch things and make sure I do empty the bladder when I go.

Hi, all

Stupid question here..... can you define bladder spasms a little bit

for me? Do you mean a strong urge to empty the bladder more frequently

than one would expect? Or do you mean pain in that part of the body in

another way?

I have had an unusual frequent urge for several years now, but

intermittently. I mean, it might be an annoyance for months, and then

it seems to go back to normal for a while. I toyed with the idea of a

bladder infection, and finally just had a urine culture last Friday.

No results yet. I don't think that causes it though, because I never

have any pain on emptying my bladder. The urologist, whom I consulted

several years ago just thought that I did not empty my bladder

completely, but I don't think that is the problem, because I am quite

careful about that aspect now, and still have the same situation again

from time to time. The urologist also suggested a Beta blocker (sorry,

I cannot remember the name, but the same med used for hypertension and

some other things). I decided not to take it, because I am already

antihypertensive medication, and don't want to rock that boat. In the

past I did take cranberry extract capsules, and I had a guess that they

might have helped, but not sure, really. Sometimes I also thought this

came and went on its own. Currently, I hit the cranberry extracts

again, for about 3 weeks, without noticeable improvement.

Of course I am also at an age where they will just pass it off on

" getting older " . I am not buying that right now, but still trying to

understand what else might be going on in my body to make it come on

intermittently.

Regards to all

Yes, I would distinguish between frequency/pressure and a spasm. I have

frequency/pressure 24/7 due to IC. Spasms are intermittent. To me, a bladder

spasm feels like a spasm in any other muscle.

year I take Macrobid at the first sign and I also take pyridum and it is

wonderful, I had all kind of testing done through my life and even had a bladder

scope done and nothing was ever found this is what works best for me hope this

Macrobid is very good, I had one doctor that kept me on a red sulfa compound

that turned

my urine orange (we lived in Missouri and the water had iron in it so couldn't

hardly tell). There is an OTC Azo-Gantrasin (I think) that is for urinary pain

relief and it also discolors the urine. I also have been plagued with urinary

tract problems since childhood and having toxemia when my oldest son was born.

Have any of you guys with bladder issues tried to take mega-doses of

acidophilus? If I skip a day, I get severe bladder pain and painful

urination. Mega-doses for me has been two capsules of the high-

potency Puritan's Pride brand, although sometimes I have to take 8 or

more capsules in a day to get relief. I tried to just eat yogurt,

but it doesn't work for me (and I use Stonyfield Farms, which is

supposed to be quite active).

I think Puritan's Pride sells under several local labels, like

Twinlab for example. You should be able to find acidophilus capsules

easily - the high potency ones I take say " Probiotic Acidophilus with

Pectin, 3 Billion Live Cells per capsule " . The chewable kind my kids

(and rabbits :) use has only 100 million live cells per tablet. So

look for the number of cells in the billions, IMHO. There are a few

other good bacterias out there, like bifidus, you may see them as

additional active ingredients.

Several of the doctors in my doctor's practice now recommend taking

acidophilus when taking any oral antibiotic. YMMV, I'm not a medical

doctor, but it's helped me out a lot.

Hi Heidi,

Thank you for the good information concerning bladder spasms. I also have

urine retention. So it is difficult. Unfortunately it seems these meds can

cause urine retention and constipation, which I have both. Really bad

constipation.

Dr. Korson wants me to see a urologist so I will start working on that

soon. I was so hoping that they would just go away.

You stated that it wouldn't be helpful for my doctors to just assume it is

mito, mito, mito for every symptom, and I agree with you. But it seems that

they get worse when I am in a crash, stressed out, etc. So I will do what

Dr. Korson asked me to do and find out if it is anything that can be

treated, fixed or at least helped.

Thanks

Hi a,

Thanks for the info. Looks like DitropanXL won't do me any good since I

have severe constipation.

I am glad that it helps you. It is hard when you think you emptied your

bladder totally and 5 minutes later you can fill a pool..... :-[
