My rotator cuff pain was one of the most intense pains I have ever

felt - labor pains were mere twinches by comparison. Yes, the pain

went down to my elbow, but of course, I had fallen on the elbow which

tore it. My tear was so severe, that I was unable to move the sholder

at all. When it was moved for me, the pain was even worse

I would highly recommend that you get treatment for this right away. A

less severe tear (still lots of pain) can be treated without surgery

in many cases, but does need treatment. My son tore his and was able

to avoid surgery by having anti-inflammatory meds and physical therapy

over several weeks.

Good luck. I'll be thinking of you.

Horrible, sudden searing pain could also be a partial dislocation.

I've had a partially dislocated shoulder and hips (both, at different

times luckily), and my son has had a full elbow dislocation. Pain is

unbelievable, but pain decreases tremendously after popping it back

in place. Best done at a doctor's office the first time, otherwise,

I pop my shoulder and hip back in as soon as I figure it out, and I

was told how to get my son's elbow back in (had to do it once,

luckily it hasn't recurred since then).

Just a thought,

Thanks Laurie,

Yes, my shoulder pain is really bad. I can hardly move my shoulder, and I can't

freely move my arm like I can move my other one.

Just moving it in the wrong direction causes intense pain that no one should

have to ever experience.

It will have to wait b/c I am going to Boston for my J tube surgery next week.

This couldn't have happened at a worse time for me. I think I will call my PCP

and ask her for some Flexeril.

I am happy to hear that your son was able to avoid surgery and that the physcial

therapy and muscle relaxants helped him.

Thanks again

Hugs,

Ann-Marie

RH,

Reading your post made me cringe in pain...

Have they told you why your shoulder and hips become dislocated? Is it lack of

calcium in your bones? or the fluid in between your joints?

I am sorry that you and your son go through this. Poor little guy. By knowing

how to pop them back into place at home, it surely cuts down on time spent at

the Hospital

Thanks

Ann-Marie

My husband had a torn labrum, as opposed to a torn rotator cuff. I

guess the thing is, make sure you get a doctor who is willing to do

an arthrogram or whatever necessary testing (that is, something

beyond an Xray). The first doctor my husband went to did an Xray,

and said " probably torn rotator cuff, we'll go in and take a look " .

The second doctor did an arthrogram, and found that the rotator cuff

was fine, but the labrum (like the patella (knee cap) in the knee,

but in the shoulder) was torn. Big difference in the surgeries for

each, and exploratory surgery on the shoulder was not a good prospect.

But after rereading your email, the fact that you can move certain

ways and not others makes me wonder about a dislocation (or a broken

collarbone, any chance of that?). ('Course, if it is a dislocation

only, the anesthesia at your surgery should help everything loosen up

and slide back into place!)

Take care,

My dog who is 7 1/2yrs.old just this week tore her patella. I am hoping she will

heal without surgery, but it doesn't look good right now. She walks on her

tip-toes and is in alot of pain. We are giving her meds to help keep her

comfortable, but only time will tell.

Good thing that your husband had the arthrogram. Can you imagine having the

surgery done for your rotator cuff instead

of what was really wrong? Totally different types of surgery. Thank goodness

for second opinions!!!

Funny you asked about my collarbone, well, it is swollen and does hurt. That was

the first thing I noticed was wrong, and then the shoulder pain came soon after.

I am wondering now, if I should cancel my J tube surgery and tend to this first.

But the Mito docs will not be happy if I put off the J tube surgery any longer.

But if it is just a dislocation, the anesthesia would certainly help it.

So much going on all at once, and add all the stress that my body is going

through right now, it doesn't make a sound body for surgery.

Hugs,

Ann-Marie

Poor puppy!

I broke my collarbone when I was 12. It took me 6 weeks to go to the

doctor - I finally noticed a bump on my collarbone. The only

problems I was having is that I couldn't sleep unless I had a pillow

under my shoulder/arm, and couldn't move the arm certain ways.

If you do have a broken collarbone, they would probably give you

a " figure 8 " brace, and not do much more. Even if you have a torn

rotator cuff, I'm sure there are things they can do without surgery

(like for Laurie's son) that should ease your pain.

It's a tough call - my take on pain is related to whether it is all

the time, and how severe it is (and also how long it has been going

on). I spent most of Sunday with severe arthritis pain in my spine,

and managed to do some exercise which finally loosened it up (and

confirmed it was my arthritis instead of something new). I guess if

I was in your situation, with the surgery scheduled for next week,

I'd request an Xray at least ASAP (do you think you'll be screaming

from pain on the operating table - they might notice LOL?) Could you

ask your mito doc (Dr. H-P? Clinic is today, so she might be able to

answer today if you call or fax) about the Flexeril, that is if you

can take it before surgery?

Wishing you and your dog healing vibes!

Take care,

No, no one has mentioned why it might happen. My sons have dx'd

hypotonia, so I might have some too. I first dislocated my shoulder

in college, and the doctor asked if I swam or lifted weights. I

laughed, no I didn't, just have big shoulders for a woman. Since

then, it's the same shoulder, every few years or so.

Regarding my son, the doctor says that elbow dislocations are common

at around 3 to 4 years old, I hope (fingers crossed) he has grown out

of it.

My hips are messed up because of my back injury and surgery - the

muscles and nerves got permanently damaged from that, and they just

couldn't return to 100%. I'm REALLY lucky that I don't have more

problems from my hips and back, between the arthritis, nerve, and

muscle damage. The mito doc (Dr. h-p) can't figure out if I have a

gait problem, or just can't walk straight because of these issues.

Sorry to make you cringe - we have a high pain tolerance in our

family, perhaps mito-related, so no biggie :) I also take methyl

sulfonyl methane, which is supposed to help repair joints (provides

sulfur for repair proteins), I find it is the only thing keeping me

out of the hospital for my back and hip pain.

Take care,

It sounds like some type of connective tissue disease of which there are

several types.

Now that I think of it, I've been screened for scleroderma (a long

time ago), I wonder if I should search out a rheumatologist...
