Guest guest
well wouldn't that partly be because the heart muscle is at risk anyway with mito? Or at least I know it is with MELAS but high cholesterol (and tri-glycerides) can cause all sorts of problems from the heart to stroke to deep vein thrombosis to brain disfunction. I am just raising questions to your statement and of course if diabetes is involved...the eyes, heart, circulatory system, kidneys all become involved. Guest guest
Someone needs to ask this on the ask the mito doc section of the UMDF site as Dr Cohen was very clear. He told me that having high cholesterol was more damaging than taking statins. Guest guest
Good idea, although I think you may be lucky your treatment (statin and increased CoQ10) has worked well for you. In that I am unlucky - I have problems tolerating CoQ10, so I dread if I have to start taking a statin. Perhaps that is an idea, if someone tolerates CoQ10 (most mito people do I guess), a statin drug might be an option. My MDA doctor keeps saying at my visits " so you're taking the CoQ10 " - I have to explain to her each time that I had major side effects from it. Does anyone else who can't take CoQ10 have a mito doc who keeps mentioning CoQ10? It seems most of the people on this list are taking CoQ10 with no problems and reduced symptoms. Take care, RH > > > > > >>I am on a statin and have been for about 10 months now. I > >> > >> > >increased my > > > > > >>CoQ10 when I was put on it by 400 mg a day. Guest guest
, surely you should have your cholestral checked and then he would discusss your options in light of the mito with you Gilian > > > > > >>I am on a statin and have been for about 10 months now. Guest guest
Statins are also renal protective and the kidneys can be involved as well in mito...maybe this is why some of our Docs consider the risk worthwhile Gillian > well wouldn't that partly be because the heart muscle is at risk anyway with > mito? Guest guest
I can't take Q10 but do take a statin only low dose though, checked with my Doc last night, appears it is not doing anything but good at present, asked for a Q10 blood test cannot be done locally so have to wait till next month and ask mito doc to do it..other new cholestral drug available is Ezetrol which has a different method of action and may be safer..If you need in the future to take cholestral busting drugs maybe you could talk about alternative drugs/meds Gillian > > > > > > > > >>I am on a statin and have been for about 10 months now. Guest guest
I can tolerate the CoQ10 (in high dosages). I won't - however take a statin drug, even with my high cholesterol levels. (With a significantly low CoQ10 deficiency, my metabolic doc didn't argue with me on that decision). I do get pushed to up my dosage of carnitor. I have difficulty tolerating dosages of carnitor over 990mg/day. (can't figure that one out - as I have deficiences in both you'd think my body would be thrilled to get either of these supplements). Guest guest
Maggie, I'm curious---do you get GI side effects from Carnitor? Is that what limits your dose or is it some other reaction peculiar to your metabolic situation? Barbara I do get pushed to up my dosage of carnitor. I have difficulty tolerating dosages of carnitor over 990mg/day. (can't figure that one out - as I have deficiences in both you'd think my body would be thrilled to get either of these supplements). Guest guest
I got seizures on a starting dose of Carnitor (I'm thinking 1 tsp. of the liquid each day, not sure what that would add up to in mg of carnitine). Much less than 990 mg? I'm wondering, is anyone on acetyl-L-carnitine? I haven't tried it, but I'm thinking it might work better for me than carnitine. Guest guest
2 teaspoons is supposed to be 1000 mg accoriding to my pharmacist back in 2002. I do not have the literature that comes with the carnitor because I got the last batch thru TRICARE mail order pharmacy and they changed suppliers. So 1 teaspoon should be 500 mg. The bottle I have says Carnitor is Levocarnitine Oral Solution with active ingredient L-carnitine 1/g/10 ml. Inactive ingredients are Artificial cherry flavor, D, L-Malic Acid, Methylparaben NF, Propylparaben NF, purified Water, Sucrose syrup. You may want to talk to your pharmacist about the insert that comes with the Carnitor to see the ingredients and warnings. Also maybe the the new generic carnitor is made with different inactive ingredients if those are causing a problem. I usually get my carnitor from Walgreens but the mail order pharmacy sent some in November after I had to send Express Scripts verification in the form of prescriptions to get the Qgel reapproved. Of course they screwed it all up even though I sent their request letter along and sent carnitor and said that the Qgel was not available. When I get the paperwork together again and the energy I need to resubmit and fight this all again. You do need a prescription for the carnitor but sometimes the pharmacist knows a little more about drug interaction. Janet Sample Re: statins I got seizures on a starting dose of Carnitor (I'm thinking 1 tsp. of the liquid each day, not sure what that would add up to in mg of carnitine). Much less than 990 mg? Guest guest
Do you take the carnitor and CoQ10 at the same times together each day? Guest guest
I got the full prescribing info online from Sigma's website. You know, " For Medical Professionals Only " There are also random messages across the Internet about people having seizures on Carnitor. I guess we are the " lucky " ones. I am having a tough time because it seems I do very well on a low carb diet, and it is harder to stay on the diet than to just take a pill or tsp. of syrup a few times per day. Take care, RH > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >>I am on a statin and have been for about 10 months now. Guest guest
FYI, they have over-the-counter cholesterol tests, for about $15. They are supposed to be similar in accuracy to the lab tests. You don't get the LDL/HDL split of course. Take care, RH > >>> > >>> > >>> > >>> > >>>>I am on a statin and have been for about 10 months now. Guest guest
I'm also taking omega 3 oils too, so I'm not really too worried about it, but thanks for the info. ohgminion wrote: >FYI, they have over-the-counter cholesterol tests, for about $15. >They are supposed to be similar in accuracy to the lab tests.
