Guest guest
Hello everyone I need some help. I am trying to wade through the meds for high blood pressure. In general, there are many choices, with many side effects, fatigue and muscle weakness being among them. People seem to need to try different combinations until they find the right med/s. My questions - do a lot of us have hypertension? - do a lot of us have a high pulse? - what meds seem to agree/disagree with us as (possible) mito patients? Some meds are used for other heart problems as well as high blood pressure or high pulse. Any experience/knowledge that you are willing to share would be greatly appreciated. My blood pressure has been high since I was in my late 30's, and my pulse has been on the high side ever since I can remember. I have had chest pain/pressure for at least 15 years. I have been checked out with a rapid catscan (just can't remember the exact name) echos and stress tests,. Findings are not very satisfying. A little bit of this and a little bit of that. I can't find a cardiologist to really look at it and explain things to my satisfaction, so I have been playing ostrich about it. Bottom line is they say I am not at high risk presently of having a heart attack, but I do have atherosclerosis, and a few other irregularities, and the BP needs to me controlled. I have been on different meds for BP. I am NEVER sure if some of my symptoms are related to the meds. I was very unhappy yesterday, though, when I learned that one of the current meds (Norvasc) might have as a side effect of a rapid pulse. Mine is around 100 at rest very frequently these days. Also, my " pulse pressure " , defined as the difference between the top (systolic) value and the bottom (diastolic) value is higher than normal, even with BP control. In other words, my systolic is less controlled than my diastolic at this time. Some experts feel that this condition is a very strong predictor of future coronary problems, maybe even stronger than an elevated BP with a lower " pulse pressure " Sooooo - again, any help/knowledge shared experience will be much appreciated! Guest guest
Have you tried control of high BP by changing your diet (reducing salt would be a first thought)? They should be able to determine whether the high BP is directly due to the high pulse rate or not - that would guide which med to use. Only med I ever was on for HBP was Calan, and it sent my pulse rate and BP way down (BP 70/40) and I couldn't get out of bed. But various HBP pills work differently, so they need to determine what the cause of your HBP is to find the best treatment. IMHO, spending some time to find a decent cardiologist to give you a picture of why you're having HBP is better than starting the " which drug? " wheel with a GP. Guest guest
Sorry, forgot to mention I had HBP when I was 18 and 19, and it resolved through dietary changes. I now (almost 20 years later) have HBP once in a while (150/100), but usually have a low pulse rate (60 or less), so have LBP once in a while too.
