Guest guest
As it takes so much longer to wash gluten out of the system, it is usually recommended that you do a casein test first. Get some lactose reduced milk so that you won't confuse a lactose intolerance with casein. Give a full glass first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and then resume the strict GFCF diet. You may see a reaction in less than an hour, but wait 2 days to be sure. If you don't see a reaction, then try a gluten challenge. Pick a food your child likes that doesn't have dairy. A bagel or a few pretzels are possible choices. Again offer them first thing in the morning and then back to GFCF. In this case, you should see a reaction within 3 days. Possible reactions for both include spaciness/inattention, loss of language or other skills, a marked increase in stims, wild behavior, reddened skin, diarhea, etc. Often parents report that they see a reaction followed by an actual improvement in skills/behaviors. This is an indication that the diet is necessary, as re-introducing the foods will generally result in a slow deterioration in this case. (People who understand homeopathy have an explanation for the short-lived improvement, but I don't understand it well enough to repeat it.) If you really don't see a reaction in these challenges, then try re-introducing the forbidden foods. You may see a slow regression which indicates that you might not have been completely GFCF when you thought you were. If you still see no regressions, then it's likely that the diet isn't the answer for your child. Good Luck and keep us posted.
