Hi everyone,

This is semi-off topic, but I was wondering what experiences anyone has had with

the new time-release methylphenidate --Concerta? Our almost 11 year old

daughter has been taking Adderall for almost a year for a mild ADD, and the

reason our psych prescribed it because it was longer acting than Ritalin, so she

would not need it at school. Now that this Concerta is available, I am

wondering if it is a preferable medication. It seems like I read somewhere that

methylphenidate is the drug of choice for ADHD, and I'm looking for anyone's

experiences before we see our psych again in 2 weeks.

Things are going well on the GFCF front for our son, Graham. He is trying some

new foods and I am getting more confident in feeding him and baking. Also, he

has gained about 3-4 lbs since January which is terrific (he has always been so

skinny). My husband frequently mentions how much more he is talking and

interacting. Wish we were seeing some decrease in the hyperactivity, but he has

just started SI therapy at school, and I think this may assist with that.

Anyway, once again we have outlived our critics--it's the story of my life :-)

Thanks for all of your help.

Fondly,

J--mom to Graham and Hayley

Hi,

My son, 9, takes Concerta and we like it very much. In our particular

experience the only stimulant that helped him was methylphenidate.

Unfortunately for him the side effects are harsh. Adderall was not

effective at all (for him). His behavior reports from school have

improved on Concerta, and his school work looks about the same. He takes

other meds and supplements at noon so we don't get that particular benefit

from it. All in all, we are very pleased with this medication. There is

a pretty quick difference when it starts wearing off, so I would get your

daughter started on homework by 4:00. If you go to the manufacturers

website (search on concerta) they have a chart that shows how this stuff

works time wise. It's most effective from noon - 2:00 and will be gone

from their system around 6:00 or 6:30 pm.
