Among other things (ha) I have COPD and my Grandson got me some " Zicam

Concentrated Cough Mist, Plus D " , it is in a 0.75 fl oz/22.2 mi, spray

cannister. Active ingredients, Dextromethorphan HBr and Phenylephrine HCI--when

I start to cough I just spray once on one side of the very back of my throat

and I rarely have to use more than one spray. I also use a Spriva Handihaler at

bedtime as well as one 400 mg Humibid twice daily (Guifi----) that word for you

used for Musinex as well as an albuterol inhaler four times daily as PRN. I

have been given so much Trimox (Amoxicylin) that I am surprised that it does me

any good. Biaxin won't kill me but it leaves such a horrible taste in my mouth

that I get nauseated, Z-paks are OK but if I really have an infection they go to

Augmentin. I was given so much penicillin as a child when I was in kindergarten

and had measles, strept, whooping cough, strept, scarlet fever, strept,

diptheria and finally rheumatic fever that they began to wonder if I had built

up an immunity to it but in 1942 there wasn't that many antibotics. They

started me on mycin drugs as soon as they were " invented " . I do think that the

Humibid is more helpful to me that the Musinex, but that is just my opinion.

They both do have the same active ingredient only I think (?) that the mg are

different. I stay away from codeine as much as I can as they used to give me a

cough syrup with a codine derivitive, I can't remember the name but it was red

and you had to sign for it when you bought it, that was when I was 16/17. When

I had my surgery for ovarian cancer i got a horrible cough and they fed me

codeine terpahydrate (sp), it was clear and tasted awful but I couldn't stand to

cough as I had hemorraged after my surgery and they had to redo me to go in and

stop the bleeding and they had my abdomen tightly banded. What a disaster?

There are articles in the Mitochondrion journal about erythromycin

affecting mitochondrial proteins (in addition to bacterial proteins,

which is its mode of action I believe). I was on erythromycin many

times in my childhood, so sometimes I wonder if that caused my mito.

On the other hand, I don't have much of a choice as I am allergic to

penicillin. I usually take Zithromax (azithromycin?) lately, and

haven't had any trouble with it, even took it when pregnant.

Have you tried guanefesin (sp?) with codeine cough syrup (or just

Mucinex, which has the first ingredient only and is OTC)? It's

helped me to get over sinus/bronchial infections with or in addition

to antibiotics (sometimes I have to take more than one course).

Take care,

Goodness, Dolores, thank you for such a long answer. You really are a

sweeheart. You could write the book on this stuff. I will study it

carefully. Thanks again, and God bless.

Some of it had some pretty tiny print so it took me awhile. I still want to try

to answer Sunny on her meds, but I have had such a horrible headache again today

from my BP being high that I have nad an icepack on my head for awhile this

evening. Seriously, if you can find some of that Zicam in your area, I imagine

Jeff got it at our Wal-Mart as he worked there while he was in college. I

imagine you are in bed as I missed calling my Grandaughter again due to the time

difference, so I will say have a good day guessing you are on the east coast.
