Guest guest
I agree. The foundation is where it needs to be - this kind of thing is exactly what it's for right? It can then be granted or funded for when things need to be (such as overseas shipping). And I'm all for the database, being I'm kind of a database person in the first place. The shoes really need to be kept track of if we're going to get them to the people who need them. Sizes being the most important thing to keep track of, with who has them to offer being second. A pair of shoes very well could serve 3 or 4 families before they wear out so theoretically they'd become available multiple times. Granted, it could be very loosely set up for swapping which would be easier in general. But quite honestly I don't know how effective it'd be that way. Say for example, if I offered shoes one day and say there's 3 parents who reply... who do I send them to? The first responder like freecycle or the one who I like the best? (examples!) If there's a listing of available shoes and people can go to the foundation or administrator to request what they need it's much better organized. Also, you can put in for what you need if it's not available and if the item comes up you can then be notified. And it can also offer to people not online since the foundation can contact physicians and brace shops, etc. to tell them about it and get new participants. And overseas stuff? What happens to the stuff that doesn't get swapped in a timely fashion? That stuff could be boxed up and sent to Uganda for example. I think is saying she's ready to take this step with her foundation and it would be a good service to add to it. I'm all for it. Guest guest
Great Points, Kori. As well as what she said, as soon as the Foundation gets enough money, I want to help parents purchase a new pair of shoes (for CF) or bar if that is what they need. I am extremely dedicated to this. I have lived with clubfoot my entire life, my 2 girls were born with it as well. I have a physician who acts as my Executive adviser and is the co-signer on our checking account. , another mother on this list, who has a daughter with BCF acts as the President of the Board of Directors. I am incorporated in Florida as a non profit and have the application for the Tax Exemption on my desk to submit. I had someone working on the Tax Exemption that never submitted it for me. unfortunately, that put us behind. But the focus of this foundation is to help parents and our kids in any way we can. There wasn't any help when I had my kids and desperately needed 150.00 for a pair of shoes and the DBB.... I swore to God, I would never let another parent have to decide between feeding their family and getting the necessary treatment their child needs. I would be honored to take this on. Guest guest
If it is foundation controlled then how do you decide what need is? Is it based on financial need only? Like if I donate 10 DBB compatible outfits will I be able to get some outfits in return? will I have to submit financial information? Or will someone say, " well I think you can afford them and this person makes less money than you so they get them instead of you? " I am all for this idea, but I do not want to think of it as a charity project. I am not against charity a bit, just a little confused about what our goal is for this project. I was thinking it would be more informal, like friends trading clothes. I think that if someone is donating then they should be able to get back too, not necessarily just because they can't afford to buy something...isn't that what makes it a swap and not a charity? I am all for 's foundation heading up the project, if that is what she/everyone else wants to do. But I don't want someone to just send me stuff without atleast a description or brand listed. Like most moms, I have my own ideas of what is cute on Kaitlin and as we all know, different brands run different sizes with different fits, Kaitlin can still wear 3-6 month onsies, but wears as big as 18 month pants...makes no sense to me either, but it just depends on the brands. I agree that we were making it a little more complicated than necessary. I like the idea of having it on a set day, maybe just once or twice a month or something. I don't like the idea of feeling like I am taking something from someone who may " need " it more than me, especially if I am donating too. Maybe I am overthinking it or misunderstanding it somewhere. I lost the vision that I pictured earlier today...with all the talk of tax exemptions and stuff.... Maybe we need 2 swaps. One that is formal and foundation based and one that is informal and group based on a set date, like the homeschooling swap mentioned earlier. Someone please help explain this to me, a little more clearly. Freeman
Guest guest
Hello all, This is an excellent idea. I have been trying to give my size 00 DBB shoes and bar to someone who needed it. I will even pay for shipping, I just wanted to help someone else out. If anyone is interested let me know.My insurance company finally paid for the shoes too. Liana mjz28ss@... wrote: I agree, the idea is an excellent one. I have a good bit of stuff that works great with the DBB and I hate to just auction it on ebay b/c I don't feel like anyone on there would truely appreciate the functionability of the clothes like those with a DBB would. :-) The point system is also an excellent idea, but what happens if several people want the same items? I mean, how would we decide who gets what? Or if someone had a newer baby and had not accrued any points yet, but wanted something. would we do negative points for those people? I think it is a GREAT idea and would be a huge asset to this web group, kind of like an online consignement store for clubfoot babies! I would offer to help technically, but I am computer illiterate when it comes to stuff like web design and such. Guest guest
I totally agree ee! This is getting way too complicated. If you've got stuff to get rid of, list it once and let people contact you. If you need something, list a need and let those who have it contact you. Simple easy and welcoming for those who have a need and those who want to help. alicia > > >I don't think it would get ugly, I was just wondering. Guest guest
This shouldn't be a complicated concept to grasp. The most simple way for this to be handled is through the Foundation. Like said, this is exactly what we are there for, to help families who need it. We don't need to worry about points and if you donate something, what do you get, or do I need to donate to get something I need? When someone is in need, they can contact the Foundation and we will go from there. If you have something that you don't use any longer, we'll get it to the foundation where an inventory will be kept. The need will be based on financial need and a request form will have to be filled out and submitted to the foundation. We do not need a watch dog to watch the watch dog, we are incorporated by the state of Florida as well as in the process of becoming a registered not-for-profit agency. Our watch dog is the federal government. Nothing will be cheated or mishandled, this is a by the books foundation set up to help other people like us, plain and simple. If anyone has any questions about the foundation or how to become involved, you can email either or I, or you can visit our website and submit a query through the site. This swap idea is a GREAT idea which and I have talked about setting up before. With the help of the members of this board, we can make it a success and help as many families as we can! Guest guest
I'm sorry, but I think the tone of that message was really unecessary. No one was questioning the upstaning of you or the foundation. The concern was very real and understandable and you have made it sound petty and ghastly. Don't get me wrong, I think what you want to do is a wonderful thing, and I think it would be great. I also think that there needs to be availability to swap items with eachother without a financial needs assessment, too. You may not realize this, but a financial assessment cuts out alot of people who still cant afford to be buying things new. It also cuts out the spirit of exchanging things with people you " know " just because they want or need something you no longer want or need. Two examples: I sent Kori an adjustable bar that I no longer needed. I did not do it because I thought she could not afford such things. I did it because I had gotten to know Kori a bit and I thought she would LIKE the adjustable bar. Heck, all of Darbi's stuff is free because it comes from Shriner's. It was simply done in the spirit of sharing something with a friend. Also, I know what it is like to be in desperate financial need. I had to have several hospital bills for my oldest daughter written off because I was all but destitute and had not lived in the state long enough to apply for medical assistance yet. This was before I met my husband, when I was a single parent. On the flip side, right now we dont qualify for assistance from anyone who uses financial assessments because my husband makes too much money and has good insurance. But we still cant afford new things. Financial assessments dont always tell the whole picture. We have 3 kids living with us and pay child support for a 4th. We have a mortgage and 2 car payments. Kai has medical bills in the thousands of dollars - and that is for our 20% - from casting & care, allergists, genetecists, developmental screening and occupational/speech therapy. But we dont even qualify for reduced lunch prices. So, try not to think so harshly on those who want to have availability to open exchange. I really think there should be both. I would be happy to send what shoes and bars I have to your foundation so that they could go to someone in need. I would also like to be able to offer other things I may have to people I " know " from the list, just because I think they may like them and get use out of them. Guest guest
OK HOLD UP... I have to step in here and clarify a couple of things.... first thing being.... I just want to get involved with shoes and bars... exchange on a first ask first serve basis. The financial assessment was to formal for this kind of thing. I will help anyone and everyone. You have to know that when my first daughter was born, I was so freakin' broke, I had to borrow money for all of her shoes and her co-pays for her castings. I have had to have hospital bills written off because, 4 years ago, I barely had an extra penny. YOU all have to understand that above paragraph was the original reason I started the foundation a year ago. If you had the opportunity to read in a previous post, I swore not another parent would have to choose between a pair of Markell shoes and putting food on the table. Please understand that I, personally, except for a single rummage sale have funded this organization with my own personal money. I am not tooting any horn, I am trying for all of you to understand that I want this here for everyone at any time. I want this organization to be around when our kids have babies, if they have a child with clubfoot, they have somewhere to turn to. The below statement broke my heart. I, too, was in the same situation, when my second daughter, was born with clubfoot and her doctor was reactivated in the Navy for the Iraq war. I couldn't afford to go to Iowa and I begged several different agencies to help me. I wasn't able to get any assistance either, we had to wait for him to return to complete her treatment. Please understand that I was born with clubfoot, my 2 daughters were born with clubfoot and my heart belongs to this foundation, the kids that I want to help and you, their parents. Angelmommy23: " PS - your mission statement: " To provide support and assistance through education and financial assistance to families and their children who have orthopedic disabilities or orthopedic birth defects. Guest guest
I agree completely Angel. The spirit of giving for the pleasure of giving has gone out the window. Governed by the state of Florida - cool. But who is deciding what financial guidelines a family has to meet before they qualify for the foundation's assistance? I for one would rather poke a stick in my own eye before I'd apply for an application and fill it out to see weather or not I qualify for a pair of modified pajamas. I can modify my own pajamas. As for boots, there ought to be about six thousand used pair on this loop by now and we've always shared freely with each other for several years now with out forms to fill out, federal intervention or fnancial statements involved. I sent of a pair of boots to a few months ago, free except the six bucks shipping she offered to cover. Heck, I would have paid shipping too- ain't no biggie. She needed boots, I had boots (DBB). Bing Bang it was done and we were both happy and no body was filling out forms to determine who qualified for the boots she needed. I think the Foundation is one thing, and even a good thing. But I think the idea of a few friends on a board swapping discarded items in the name of friendship is a horse of a different color all together. A day or two ago someone said it wouldn't get ugly, after all, we're friends! What a difference a day can make. s. Re: clubfoot swap idea I'm sorry, but I think the tone of that message was really unecessary. No one was questioning the upstanding of you or the foundation. Angel PS - your mission statement: " To provide support and assistance through education and financial assistance to families and their children who have orthopedic disabilities or orthopedic birth defects. Guest guest
I think what has happened here is mis-communication. , perhaps you should make another effort to describe what you want to see happen with your foundation n regard to donated items. I thought we were talking about swapping a few cloths, maybe an altered toy like a saucer once in a while....and of course used DBB's. On that leve (except shoes), the foundation's mission as I understand it does sound too complicated so maybe I am not understand it, and perhaps others here are not either judging by the recent tone's of voices I am reading. Maybe you could explain to us how financial or other need would be assessed by your foundation. I really hate to see all the ill will here girls, lets try to get a firmer understanding so we're all on the same page then maybe we can work together better? Merry Christmas, s. Guest guest
My message came across entirely the wrong way. I was not implying that there would need to be financial assessment in order to swap modified clothes, shoes, bars, etc. We would like to be able some day soon, to give people money for things that they need. That is something where financial need will be a factor as we can't just send money everywhere to anyone. If we had unlimited funds, that might be a different story, but we don't. Like I wrote to Angelmommy23, my intention was not to come across as I did. I just wanted to make the point that we (as a group) shouldn't complicate this and that we (the foundation) just want to help. To be a central hub of supplies needed, and to take on the responsibility of taking care of other people's needs. I apologized to her and I apologize to everyone who read that and took it in a negative way. I did not mean to sound harsh and I'm sorry if I offended anyone. www.pediatric-orthopedic-foundation.org > > > > This shouldn't be a complicated concept to grasp. Guest guest
Sorry that there is such bad blood about this. Like I had said before, the foundation is only interested in the shoes/bar swap. I really can't believe that I have put my heart and soul into this and I am treated like a police dog. You have acted as if I am out to get someone. Which is absolutely not the truth or even a fleeting thought in my mind. I have only offered to help. Which has not been accepted by all. My feelings have been deeply hurt. You act as if I don't know about any of this, I have lived through clubfoot myself and through my 2 kids. I have FOUGHT for kids with an orthopedic diagnosis, when other people turn their back. I, in my mind can't imagine ever treating someone who is willing to help, like a second class citizen. I will not allow this to ordeal to take me a step back, but move forward with the same dedication. I truly mean no ill will towards any of you, but it seemed that some of you were meaning it to me. Guest guest
and all, When I suggested the shoe/bar swap it was to help anyone that needed it. I believe that became involved due to offering to cover shipping costs and possible handling other people who contact her for help that are not computer users. (There are still many out there who do not have computers). I, for one, did not plan on all the difficulty in putting a simplified system into place. At this point in time, after reading all the posts on this subject, I would suggest that it continue to be done on an item to item basis from private person to private person. It wasn't intended to create hurt feelings or frustration. I understand that it is difficult to pass on opinions and feelings through this system. And many times the reader reads a totally different version from what the writer meant. But to put it all in a nutshell. Please be willing to offer items that you have available, so that those who don't feel comfortable asking for them may respond to your offers. Guest guest
I think this is right on ee, we're not really communicating properly about this. I am pretty sure that the information presented about the foundation is more directed as a *whole* than as to directly describe what we want to do here with the exchange and that got it all mixed up as far as who is going to benefit and who can swap and who can blah, blah, blah... I do need to point out a few things because I'm a Libra and I just MUST see both sides lol! Those who have not been actively involved in not for profit foundations/organizations don't understand the things an organization must do to be able to offer the services and assistance it's set up to offer. If you don't have non-profit 401C3 status in the state the organization is housed in (in this instance, Florida) the organization has to pay taxes on EVERYTHING that comes in including grants and donations. If didn't have this status for the foundation it'd be dead in the water. So don't read too much into the whole NP and Tax exempt stuff she talked about. Quite honestly, that's internal stuff that normally wouldn't be big news for the membership other than an announcement that the 401C3 status has been granted. And, not to say that those of us out here on the list can't be interested or offer assistance or suggestions in any way to the organization but none of us are members so it's not really right to jump in and start deciding what the foundation can and can't do in this respect (not that anyone is, I just wanted to point out that little bitty there - decisions about the foundation start with the Executive Board who are typically elected by the membership eventually. Although not at first.) This swap idea is only a teeny tiny little itty bitty part of what a foundation like this can do or should do. Now, with that said... this foundation, once it's really up and going is our ONLY option for getting the word out to parents and docs about the Ponseti Method beyond our very small online community. None of us singly or even in a group will ever be able to do what a foundation like this can for this method. And that's not even the main focus of this foundation. The main focus as it seems to me (as an outsider who hasn't even had time to go to the foundations website - I apologize if I'm wrong here) to be able to help parents get quality clubfoot OR orthopaedic treatment regardless of their situation (for some it might be assistance with finding and/or paying for good doctors, others it'd be assistance with travel to a good doc, others might just need the education and others might need assistance with orthotics). Additionally, has undertaken a much larger job than many foundations by wanting to offer financial assisitance to those who need it rather than just education (which is difficult enough as a NP alone, without the financial part) and there WILL be forms and information for those who request the assistance to fill out because it's the law and the foundation can be held liable if they don't follow these rules and regulations. No one needs to be offended by that. And the foundation does get to decide what the criteria is for financial assistance as they see fit. There's only going to be so much assistance available in the first place and if they just handed it out willy nilly it would be a bad thing all around. Please remember, we're talking about financial assistance for things like Dr. bills or travel expenses (other things), not swapping clothes. I am pretty sure that it would be a nightmare and an outrageous concept to try to get people to submit financial aid paperwork to swap clothes and I don't really think even suggested it. What was talking about was an entirely different thing if I read it correctly. By allowing the foundation to *handle* the swap I'm sure we're not going to have to fill out information to participate. It will however provide an opportunity to help more people than just our very close and SMALL section of the non-surgical CF world. Which, if we don't want to schmooze with others would be fine but I for one am fairly disappointed by how few people we can reach here on our tiny little list as opposed to the numbers of CF babies that are born each day who know nothing about us. AND... those of us who participate will be able to reap the benefits that the foundation provides with the swap meaning that it's possible that we could just request something and it'd be shipped to us no cost. Regardless of financial need because if we let her take care of this as she knows how within her organization, she'll be able to figure out some way to handle the paperwork and all that comes with it. WE... don't need to really be concerned about that. Now, let me offer one suggestion which might be workable for everyone. I was thinking that it didn't have to be just one or the other. I love the idea about doing it like Freecycle and another list to take care of that is great. But why can't the two things work together? Such as, if you have something to offer you can post to the list and maybe someone contacts you about receiving it. If not, after a while it can go into the foundations database to be offered to the world. If it's eventually taken from the list then great, it gets deleted from the database. Additionally, if there ever was assistance with shipping the foundation would be able to help out if needed either way. If a person offers something but needs help with shipping the person who offered it will be reimbursed for the cost of shipping by the foundation. Without the foundation, this can't happen. So it seems to me that things need to be worked out to incorporate both the online community and utilize the benefits of being online with those that the foundation can offer that aren't online. With friends the security of a freecycle type exchange is fine. But the idea of an open *swap* list to the whole world... well that may just be a bad thing - who knows. But I know from owning the CFPics group that there are a ton of weirdos out there who join the list because they *like feet* or *like clubfoot* or have yahoo ID's like *amputeelover*. If you don't know the person you're swapping with please be wary of giving out your address. Who knows what kind of person might be out there who could want to hurt your child just because s/he has clubfoot. The foundation again, could really help with this particular possible problem. We are however, never going to *get* out of anything as much as we put into it. Meaning, a mom could donate 10 outfits and never receive 10 outfits back that work for her. There's never going to be any sort of watchdog that's going to make sure that we get what we put into it, either if it's done online only without any organizational tools or if it's done through the foundation. It simply will not happen so we need to understand that we can't expect that from this idea either way it works out. I do however understand wanting to be able to receive if one donates, but I think we need to take it upon ourselves to ask for things if we want them. I also am reading here that is mostly interested in shoes and bars. Which I think is a good idea. She however did only *offer* to help with the clothing part which would truly be beneficial to people because she wanted to assist with shipping. I have long thought there needs to be a more organized way to get these shoes and bars out to people and we KNOW that most of us who have gone through this whole thing have bars and shoes lying around that could help another child. We don't need them, except for maybe the first or last pair... for sentimentality sake. I suppose I might feel differently about this because we don't pay for shoes... so it's easy for me to say they're free to anyone who needs them and I don't need them lying around the house but I still think I'd just offer them to people once we didn't need them anymore. Especially if it might be possible to get a pair from the foundation in the future. Regardless of your view on this, there are people out there who need both the assistance with the orthotics as well as the support a foundation like that can offer and it's not only going to be the online community that gets the help, everyone should be ale to get help and information. Do not forget that the purpose of the foundation is not only financial assistance... education is the other part of the mission statement if I'm not incorrect and that's what we do here right? Up till recently, this whole group is only dedicated to education of other parents and support right? Let's not read into the foundation too much about how they can do what they can do... we really need to just let it happen and support it as best we can in our own way. I do think though, that if it comes down to the online community not wanting to do swapping with the foundation then we can just do it here on this list. Migrating people to another list for the occasional offer or want post is going to defeat the purpose because most people won't migrate. But those who wouldn't bother to migrate might see a wanted post for a certain item here on this list and contact the person who posted the want add. Let me also say that I really hope none of my friends here are reading this thinking I am taking any side or don't understand someone's concerns or questions about all this. I really only hope to offer a little understanding about how something like this has to work, can work and might work for us all. I too am often considered too *rich* for any assistance even though I am not feeling *rich* each month when I am looking for enough $ to feed my family. (although as of late, with dh not working for a few months recently we qualified for everything lol - did I apply? no... but I could have). And I'm also pretty protective of my baby clothes because I don't want to have to buy them again in the future should I have another child. So the offers on my part right now might not be so many other than shoes but eventually I'm going to want to get rid of it all and it'd be nice if I could make sure the items that work for a CF child in the DBB would be sent to another family that needs them rather than just anyone. Ok - so I'm going to stop now and offer assistance to anyone who needs it in regards to database function, for whatever the need... as time permits. If wants help with that I'm available so please let me know. Guest guest
Kori, Great explanation, thanks to you as well. As far as the 501c3 status from the Federal Government. I don't have it yet. I am an Incorporated non-profit in the state of Florida. The accountant that was working on the application for me, did not submit it and I just found out. I am now, scrambling to get it in ASAP. With that said, that does not hinder our mission. Thanks to all, I needed for all of you to know. IF anyone has any experience completing the 501c3 app. let me know : ) I am pulling my hair out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest guest
lol, see... it's not me who has experience with 501c3 because I can't even type it properly (401C3 - duh! I KNOW it's not a 4 but I typed it twice). What is the exact problem with the paperwork and perhaps I can find someone who knows about this. I do know one person, but to ask her about it I'd need a little more information. Email me privately and if I think she may be able to help I'll let you know. I myself... have NO IDEA lol. Guest guest
I totally agree Jen mom to Re: clubfoot swap idea I totally agree ee! This is getting way too complicated. If you've got stuff to get rid of, list it once and let people contact you. If you need something, list a need and let those who have it contact you. Simple easy and welcoming for those who have a need and those who want to help. alicia > > >I don't think it would get ugly, I was just wondering.
