Hello..back with more questions..

I was wondering what it means if the resp chain complexes on the biopsy are

high...my daughter has 60% of complex II but I is slightly elevated ( 107% )

but 4 is 170% and II/III is 150% and 7 ( NADH cytochrome ) is 160%. complex

III and V arent tested on frozen..

I read somewhere that high complexes mean the mitochondria arent functioning

well...not sure if this is true...or is it that there is a blockage?

thanks

In some articles, one theory for elevated enzyme activity has been a

compensatory mechanism---the body's attempt to make up for other

deficiencies---but this was in relation to other metabolic cycles, not

mitochondrial respiratory chain enzymes. I have no idea if that would apply

here. In my case, the activity of non-mito enzymes tested has been above

normal whereas mito enzymes are deficient. One possible interpretation is

compensation.

I'll have to look on my test results, I didn't think they did a count

of the number present, just the activity. Does % mean compared to a

normal amount of each complex, or does % mean % of normal activity?

For me, I recall noting that I had 0% activity for Complex I.

I agree that there could be compensation for the underacting complex,

by increase of others. But the doctor would probably give you a

better understanding of it.

Take care,

It would also depend on the lab and how they decide what is normal too.
