Alice, My son just turned 3, so we're about in the same ballpark. My son was MISdiagnosed (by a DAN doctor, yet) about a year ago. My husband and I finally diagnosed his autism by reading DSM-IV, which was the best description of our son we had ever read! Once we figured out that he was, in fact, on the autistic spectrum, we started treating him as if he had full-blown autism. That is my best advice for you: Don't worry about the PDD vs. autism label. Anything that works for autistic kids is worth a try. We have Brett taking cod liver oil (vitamin A) supplements, DMG, and Super Nu-Thera powder, all of which have improved his ablility to focus, learn, and attempt to be verbal. We started the GFCF diet 6 weeks ago and have seen even more progress. However, the thing that is REALLY helping him is our home ABA program, which he does for 26 hours a week. In ABA, he has learned everything from understanding the labels " Mommy " and " Daddy " , to pointing, to dressing, to his ABC's. In fact, we are looking for another ABA tutor so that we can increase his hours even further. He is also in a typical preschool 10 hours each week with a full-time facilitator, who is there to make sure he participates, especially with peer interactions. My guess is that the 3 part-time days your son has therapy are still leaving him with a lot of down time when he withdraws and his brain is not being properly stimulated. I could give you hours of praise for Brett's facilitator and ABA program, and would be happy to pass along any more information about his supplements and diet. Please let me know if you'd like more info, and best of luck to you! Sue

I am just > starting to hear about special diets and things I had no clue about. Hi- My daughter is 3.5 years old and was diagnosed PDD-NOS a year ago. Luckily, I heard about the GFCF diet immediately and put her on it. Today, after a little speech/OT therapy, a modified in home ABA program (me and our nanny) and a year on th ediet, she is a normal kid with a slight speech delay. A year ago she new 29 single words. Now she puts 8-10 word sentences togather and has conversations. Her progress has amazed everyone and the diet has been the key factor. If you'd like to talk more you can e-mail me privately (jfill7crux@...). Good luck!!! -
