Seeing Orthopedic Surgeon tomorrow... need advice

We took john to our pediatrician today because he is 14 months old

and still not walking, pulling himself up, crawling etc. They are

sending us for some blood work tomorrow to rule out any muscular

disorders. they don't think that's what it is, still thinking it's

because he was in casts for 8 months.

Anyways, we are going to our ortho surgeon tomorrow (the non-ponseti

one) and I need advice as to how to nicely suggest the ponseti

method instead of surgery. 's feet are relapsing. How did

those of you that had a non-ponseti dr. talk to them about these

issues? We have an appointment with a ponseti certified dr. on the

18th but I don't want to waste any time getting his feet corrected.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

If your original ped ortho has been talking about surgery, he may not

be really receptive to your asking him about the Ponseti method.

Over the past 5 years of watching parents experiences on the

internet, almost all of us have asked our original non-ponseti method

doctors about what they thought about the Ponseti method. I don't

remember too many (if any) where the doctor instantly accepted the

idea, let alone knew how to go about doing it.

But now as probably the majority of doctors have at least begun to

try to implement some if not all Ponseti method related approaches

into their treatment, your doctor should at least understand that the

Ponseti method has fast become the mainstream initial method of

treatment.

Many of us have had to leave our original doctors to go find someone

committed to the Ponseti method. That is not easy to do. But in the

future when your original doctor tells you that he has finally

switched over to the Ponseti method you will feel glad that you did

it when your child was still young enough for it to work.

My personal opinion, skip the Orthopedic Surgeon and wait until the 18th

to see the Ponseti doc.

That is what I did. I made the decision to switch and just started

seeing the new Ponseti Doctor and never looked back. I would have done

the same thing if I decided to switch for any other reason as well.

Uh... I didn't. I left his office as fast as I could and headed straight for

Iowa. If they are set on surgery and not already practicing the Ponseti Method

you are not likely to sway them to treat your child that way and in fact you

wouldn't want them to because they aren't trained.

I know you are very anxious to get him into see someone, but I would

suggest skipping the surgeon and wait for your appt on the 18th.

Maybe you can call the dr. you have the appt with on the 18th and see

if they have had any cancelations, or ask them to put you on a list

in case they do have one.

Let us know how it goes!

by all means do not let them do surgery. i know what you mean about

talking to the non-ponseti dr. i had to do that myself but you know what? He is

a big boy and he can handle it. He should want the best treatment for just

like you do. Logan has been out of cast for about a week now and i have been

doing scretches to keep the foot a little loose until we get up to Iowa next

week. It took us a long time to get to where we are now and the journey is not

over yet but i feel so much better now that we are finally going to Iowa. Good

Luck.

I would simply tell the Dr. that while you appreciate his advice, you

feel surgery is a radical choice at this time and would like a second

opinion. It's not your problem if he doesn't accept that, your

responsibility is to your child not to making sure the doctor doesn't

get his ego in a bunch. don't burn bridges, but you are entitled to a

second opinion and surgery for clubfoot is very radical.

How long has been in casts? , my son, severe atypical bl cf

is 15 months and has been out of casts a total of 3 months of his

life. He has just figured out how to pull himself up, but because he

never developed his leg muscles, he has to build them up. He is not

walking yet, and can hardly pull up to standing completely with feet

flat on floor. We are currently doing excercise with our physical

therapist to fix this. He has simply been in the casts so long that

he has no leg muscles. His feet are still tight and they are very

uncomfortable for him to stand on. I will be praying for you with the

bloodwork. Has your doctor suggested physical therapy?

Lord bless you,

We were scheduled for surgery with our non-Ponseti doctor. Three days

before the surgery I called the office and explained to the secretary

that we wanted to try a non-surgical Ponseti procedure before we

decided to do the surgery. They were very understanding and cancelled

the surgery for me.

Well I talked to him today and he believes that needs more

castings. He says because his muscles are not developed his feet

are not staying in position.

I am going to the Ponseti doctor on the 18th and I am not going to

put john is casts until I see the doctor.

We do see a physiotherapist once a week to help with 's muscles

and to get him moving. (my back is killing me from lugging him

around since he weighs 28 pounds!) LOL.

I guess I just need to patient! What has your ortho said about the

muscles?

did you tell him you're seeing the other doc?

good move though, better no cast than a non-effective or harmful one.

My ortho is actually dr. p, as we switched and drove to Iowa to see

him. he and my physical therapist agree that with the exercises we

do, his muscles will develop. right now we are struggling with

getting him to just put his feet down. I don't know if he's not

putting them down and putting weight on them because he's not used to

doing it and his legs have a hard time supporting himself right

now...or if it's because they still hurt. He is a very severe case,

we've relapsed once and went back in casts and now dr. p sent us a

pair of special mitchell shoes the are not attached to the bar that he

can wear during the day to learn to walk. So far he's stood once in

the crib...yay!!! but it's hard to know. Until he can say mommy it

hurts I have no idea!

We did the surgery first and we've been paying for it ever since. I

am so glad you decided against the surgery. You made a big decision

and you can be very proud of that decision. You son will be very

thankful for that. Part of the problem with non ponseti dr is they

don't recognize an atypical foot. this can be the reason casts are

not working. They are not doing the appropriate casting for his type

of foot. If you have any doubts after seeing the ponseti doctor, take

some pictures and send them to ponseti himself and have him look at

them, he will and he will respond to you. he will even work with the

doctor and come up with a plan how to best handle your sons feet.

good for you for doing what is necessary and correct!! Hang in there,

it's a long road, but you are almost there! :)

Lord bless you and give you and your doctors much wisdom,
