Guest guest
Charity, I was so interested in your skating/skiing response and that you even have " the word " from Dr. P. Interestingly enough, my son was born just one week before Trenton, I see in your signature line. The day Trenton was born, Evan was getting his first set of casts! He also continues to toe in and it worries me so much and we stress about what we should and shouldn't be encouraging him to do. As you may have read before, Dr. Mosca has diagnosed femoral torsion as the cause of his pigeon toed gait. Apparently it will diminish as his hips mature, but of course we continue to worry and worry. We tried Evan on ice skates just a few weeks ago and he could barely stand. His ankles just caved in immediately. We pushed him around on one of those bar things and his feet just slid around uselessly under him. Maybe any child new to the ice would look like that. Do Trenton's ankles seem weak when he skates? Or did they when he started? Does he have pretty good control/strength? and Evan (8-17-00) bcf, femoral torsion > Hello Jen, > > My son is now almost four and a half and I wondered the same thing. Guest guest
I can tell you that every time I try ice skating, my ankles cave inward, and I don't have clubfeet. I did break my ankle quite a few times when I was a kid. I've always hated ice skating, but I was pretty good at rollerskating in my day....! Maybe that would be easier for him? Good luck! Guest guest
I'm responding to the skiing post, but reading from the bottom and don't want to look for it again. If I had to choose what kind of snow sport for my CF child I would not necessarily choose skiing first. Or Ice skating. I think I would (will) be protective of the ankles and the movement required for the sport. When you ski you've got to stop, and that's the first thing you learn which is to point the ski's toward each other at the tips and that in my mind would be the wrong force to place on overcorrected feet. It's just not what I'd like to see my CF child doing much when first learning a sport. After all this work making sure that foot doesn't point in, snowplowing on ski's can't be the best choice. Granted, once you're better at skiing you don't use the snow plow move much to stop but it's still needed here and there. If I had to choose it'd be snowboarding for obvious reasons lol. I have had to give up skiing because my big toe on one foot just can't handle it but I want to snowboard because I won't have to rely on one foot on one board taking all the pressure. So Darbi and I are going to learn snowboarding together, probably next year for her depending on what her doc says. She's got at least one more year in the DBB so we'll see what happens. Anyway that's how I see it. After she's strong enough for snowboarding then perhaps skating and maybe skiing but I doubt she'll want to ski after snowboarding anyway. It's not like she won't be used to it by then! Kori At 09:35 AM 1/10/2005, you wrote: >I can tell you that every time I try ice skating, my ankles cave >inward, and I don't have clubfeet.
