Guest guest
> Who out there has acutally had TMJ and can enlighten me on the symptoms and treatments? Is there any reason to try to get a dental xray, which would be almost impossible if he is awake because he cannot hold still long enough? Trina: I have had TMJ, as did my brother and sister. I started with the grinding and it did make my teeth sensitive, the first thing the regular dentist did was to put some sortof clear coating on the top of my teeth to protect them from wearing the enamel off to the nerves. Then they got me a plastic bite plate to wear at night or whenever I caught myself grinding my teeth. The dentist did the same things for both of my siblings and it worked, it did not for me. I ended up having teeth pulled, braces, and jaw surgery to stop the headaches and pain. I believe that this is not the norm, I have had friends diagnosed with it and they got the bite plate and that was it. I hope this helps. Guest guest
Trina, Did you ask the doctor about a night guard for your son. It can be used during the day also if your child will keep it in. They are very expensive, I think about 300.00 to 400.00 and insurance didn't cover them last time I worked in the dental office. Another option is a sports mouth guard but bad grinders sometimes wear right through those because there plastic but alot cheaper than the one a doctor would make for you. The pain described does seem to be in the TMG area. I was wondering about losing baby teeth. My daughter complained of her teeth hurting when she was about to lose her front bottom baby teeth and sure enough the permanent ones were just waiting there. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Yes, I had TMJ after a car accident dislocated my jaw. My upper and lower teeth no longer lined up properly. I had neck aches, temple aches, headaches, excess saliva, and painful chewing. Clear speech was sometimes difficult. After a little while with chronic pain, of course sleep deprivation set in & I was exhausted & mentally not alert. The TMJ healed with time and with hot packs to my jaw joints. Later, I had a crown put in, and the TMJ returned in full bloom. Turned out that the crown wasn't ground down enough & it threw off my bite. Fixing it took a couple of visits as my TMJ was so severe at that point that it took ahile to " fine tune " the adjustment. It's gone now! BTW, my son used to grind his teeth a lot. The former dentist and doctor always put it down to stress. It faded away during the early months of the diet. With all the teeth your son is now missing, I wonder if his bite might be off? If so, grind down or building up some of the remaining teeth might alleviate the problem. In GFCFKids@y..., " Montgomery " wrote: > Hey, > > Sorry for the cross posting. My 7 yr old son with autism has the worst teeth, genetically, thanks to me and his grandfather, who also have bad teeth. Last year he had to go to the hospital and have 6 teeth pulled at the same time under general anesthesia due to abcesses, not decay. Since then, he has not complained of his teeth hurting. > > For the last 3 weeks or so, he, throughout the day, comes up to me or his therapists and says his teeth hurt. Occasionally he says his ear hurts. I took him to the ped. and dentist and his ears and throat are clear, as well as his gums and teeth (no cavities). He does, however, grind his teeth in his sleep really bad, and has worn his teeth down pretty bad. So, either his teeth are sensitive due to wear, or he has developed TMJ. He always seems to point toward the lower teeth, and presses on his jawbone bilaterally with his hands often when he is complaining of the pain. > > Who out there has acutally had TMJ and can enlighten me on the symptoms and treatments?
