Antibiotic Alternatives?

Does anyone have any suggestions on what one can do to avoid

antibiotics for infections? My daughter is very sick and has a sinus

infection, the ped. gave us antibiotics (zithromax, cherry flavored

and pink - the ingred. do not list any dyes but it is pink! Dd has

an emotional reaction to red #40) I DO NOT want to give this to her,

but she feels so bad and is so sick that I'm tempted. Does anyone

have any suggestions instead of using antibiotics (which more than

likely put us on the diet in the first place). I have heard of warm

oil drops in the ear and taking garlic, anything else? She has a

slight hearing loss in one ear and I don't want to chance a really

bad infection that could make her hearing worse. :-( Catch 22?

Thank you in advance,

Trish

Hi Trish,

Both my kids had really bad infections--in their ears and throats over the

past month and a half. I hate antibiotics and, like you, I am sure the over

use of antibiotics did help put my kids on this diet. We tried everything

alternative. Grapefruit seed extract is great but I couldn't get the kids

to take enough to make it help. We did single remedy homeopathics, we tried

combined homeopathic remedies, we did garlic and oil, we did echinacea until

an alternative doctor told us that once the infection is deep in your

system, you don't want to use echinacea because it won't let the infection

out! Echinacea is like a wall--a defense around your body. It can boost

your immune system and prevent things from coming in, but then it also makes

it hard for things to get out. I tried to ride these infections out as long

as we could, but finally we broke down and did the antibiotics.

I would not recommend going with the red dye stuff. Have your doctor call a

compounding pharmacy, like Hopewell Pharmacy in NJ, 609 466-1960, and they

can put together a no sugar, no dye, hypoallergenic suspension for you.

They can ship it overnight and you can have it tomorrow. My younger son is

on amoxicillan from Hopewell right now, and he is doing very well with it.

Also, if you do go with antibiotics, just make sure you have a good strong

probiotic. If she already takes one, maybe increase the dose a little.

Take it 2 hours before or after the antibiotic if you can, and try to keep

her away from as much sugar and yeast as you can.

Good luck getting your daughter better--

Echinacea and goldenseal help with ear infections, and garlic oil drops

which you can find at your HFS. Also someone posted a while back that taking

a bath in vinegar helped with sinus infections. I will look for that post

and try to re-post it for you. But I know for a fact the Echinacea and

goldenseal work- I had an ear infection a couple weeks ago and this combo

knocked it out in 3 days!

Silver water is supposed to be the strongest thing there is to fight

viral and bacteria infections. It is expensive ($30 a bottle) but

will last quite a while, since you generally only take a teaspoon a

day. You can put it in the ear to fight the infection, as well as

taking it orally. You can gargle with it for sore and infected

throats, put it directly on sores or warts. And with silver water

there is no concern over it killing good bacteria in the intestines

(as there is with grapefruit seed extract). You should be able to

find it at health food stores, call ahead and make sure.

Also, heat will help fight any infection (which is why we get fevers

with infections). Using heating pads over her sinus' and ear will

help kill off the infection. My mother was told to sniff salt water

into her nose and through to her throat to combat a chronic sinus

infection (though I doubt your daughter would do this). Call and talk

to several different health food stores, they are generally full of

information.

And yes, garlic oil drops will kill many infections.
