This doesn't really answer your question, but I have to say that I have had

many lay people and one dietician tell me that by putting my kid on a GFCF

diet I will make him unable to tolerate these foods in the future. I find

these type of comments alarming. Has anyone else had something similar said

to them and if so, what is an appropriate response? The old MYOB that I am

using isn't working.

Thanks,

M

What I have learned is that if you are consistently eating a food

that you have an allergy or intolerance to, your body may stop

reacting as strongly to it because it overwhelms your immune system.

Your body " shuts down " its strong reaction to the allergen. Many

people initally react strongly to getting a cat/dog with symptoms of

itchy eyes, sneezing, etc.-classic allergic reactions. But if you

keep the animal, eventually your symptoms may go away, because you

developed a " tolerance " to the allergen. If the animal ran away and

came back some time later, say 4 months(who knows how long), you may

have the symptoms again. When our kids eat dairy/gluten every day

and take them away, many see dramatic improvements. But then the

symptoms may come back, which is a sign that another food allergy is

showing its face. It was suppressed by the allergy of the

dairy/gluten. My point is, if you take away the food which didn't

seem to be a problem until your child was off it for a while and ate

it again, it means he/she does have a problem with it and definately

shouldn't be eating it. If you take away a food that is not a

problem and reintroduced it, it still wouldn't be a problem. You

can't CAUSE an allergy by taking it away and reintroducing it. It

was always a problem and affecting you in ways you may never know

(illnesses, depression, irritability, constipation, stimming, etc etc)

Hope this helps and isn't too long winded!

you can't get an allergy by not being exposed to something. You usually

have to be exposed at least once to something in some form before you will

develop an allergy to it.

My son cannot tolerate these foods NOW. The nebulous " future " isn't worth a

hoot if he is spending his time in lala land because he is all junked out on

opium. I've been fortunate, I've not had anyone tell me these things.

The proof is in the pudding for us, but for those who are still in the try

it and see timeframe window I'd politely tell these people who are worried

that my son won't eat pizza in the future for what we are trying now that

the diet trial is for a year, if it has no benefits then we will discontinue

it, but for right now adherence is important.

The problem is, this may or may not be a true allergy issue. For many, it

is really just the opiate issue. One year of not eating something will not

cause the allergy. Look at all the kids who don't touch a green veggie for

years and years, but can still eat salad and stuff when they get over this

phase.

good luck (sorry for the ranting, sometimes people criticising us for trying

to do the right thing for our kids gets under my skin....)
