Guest guest
Dawn, Sending prayers and concern and sympathy. I have stroke-like episodes that involve either slurred speech or thick, labored speech during which I can manage to say single words but no one understands. The speech problems coincide with mental confusion and extreme weakness and sometimes my tongue turns numb. For me, most of these episodes occurred during overnight fast or when my caloric intake was reduced Since I've had J-tube feedings at night (July 2003) I have not had any abnormal speech episodes or stroke-like episodes. But we are all different and this may not be 's problem. I would once again suggest looking at his new medications to see if any of those are contributing to weakness. Muscle relaxants make my muscle weakness much worse, including facial weakness, as can various other drugs. Some antihistamines have also induced stroke-like episodes for me. Whenever my symptoms take an unexpected turn for the worse, one of the first things we consider is whether any of my medications may be contributing. We are especially suspicious if new symptoms develop in the weeks following a new drug. Mito patients may be more prone to adverse drug reactions, and that is true for me. Sorry I can't offer more. I certainly hope you will be able to get the help you need. He called me at work and told me that I needed to come home. His speech was slurred and he was having trouble forming the words to say to me. I called 911 and we took him to the hospital. The Doctors here in Dayton are NOT familiar w/mito and ran several tests to check to see if he had a stroke. I gave them Dr. Simpson's number early this morning so they could call him and get the answers that they are looking for and it took them all day to call. Then, they just had his records faxed over (I am very very angry over this). He has been in the hospital since yesterday and they've run EKG's, bloodwork, corroderal (sorry of spelling) artery ultrasound to check to see if he has a blood clot that is impairing his speech. Although he has no memory or " brain " problems, he still is having great difficulty forming words. The speech therapist said she thinks the muscles in his face are weak(well DUH!!). then a rehab DR came in and tested 's reflexes and he did a reflex test on his foot he rolled his foot around in a circle and pushed it back quickly and let go. 's foot involuntarily bounced back and forth (much to our shock since we've never seen it do that before) Rehab doc said it wasn't normal and it's call Clonis (sorry for spelling). We are extremely worried that his speech won't return to normal, we go to Dr. S. on the 18th and he goes for an MRI tomorrow so please send me back some information if there is anyone who has experienced these symptoms and can share some insight for me. I would appreciate it greatly and so would . thanks for your help. Guest guest
Dawn It sounds like it could be a stoke-like event which has the look of a stroke, but is caused by lack of energy in the cells. My mother had at least one of these that put her in the hospital. They treated her with D-10 IVs and insulin. She was able to go home in two days and everything returned to her pre-condition. Her word finding seemed to be a bit worse. The therapists that were sent to the house said, " I thought you had a stroke " . Tell I am thinking of him. I appreciate your letting us know what happened and want you to know that we are here for you as well. Feel free to post whenever you want. laurie > > Reply-To: > Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2005 16:17:38 -0000 > To: > Subject: in hospital - new symptoms (please explain them) > > > Hello all - > > has been having some quivering jaw/chattering teeth episodes > the last few weeks, the last week his teeth have chattered almost > constantly. Guest guest
I had teeth chattering and the shakes, and it turned out I had pneumonia. Did they look for that? There may not even be coughing, my daughter just had it and had no coughing, just fast breathing. Take care, RH > > Hello all - > > has been having some quivering jaw/chattering teeth episodes > the last few weeks, the last week his teeth have chattered almost > constantly.
